Default Moving to Houston - Handgun Laws?

Hey everyone,

My relocation to Houston is quickly approaching and I was wondering what I need to do as far as registering my handgun in TX? If anyone has any info, I would greatly appreciate it!

Lance

There are several companies that offer concealed weapon permit classes. When I got mine, you were required to take a class from a certified teacher, then go to the range and demonstrate proficiency with the weapon. I think all together it cost less than $200.

Aside from a few Facist cities - you are not required to register handguns in most of the US.

Ditto my wife took the class, it takes about 6mo. for the state to send the licenses to you.

I always thought registering a hand gun was more common sense

You just bring the handgun(s) to Texas and keep it in your house, no need to register. I've moved all over the place here and the only registered handguns I have are those I bought AFTER it became a requirement to buy one.

Now, if you have a concealed handgun permit from your current state, Texas has this Texas Department of Public Safety - Courtesy, Service, Protection

More here Texas Department of Public Safety - Regulatory Licensing Service Concealed Handgun Licensing

LOL - I would agree that it is a good idea to record the serial numbers in case of theft. Registering can be a good way to do that.

Thanks everyone. From the sounds of it, as the gun is already registered and I have a permit to carry, I should just be able to bring it with me when I move.

You can keep the gun at your home but if you don't have a permit from Texas I would suggest keeping it at home. Ever herd the slogan "Don't mess with Texas" I was born and raised there trust me they mean it !!
