Hi All,

I plan to relocate to Houston from Sacramento CA in the near future. Can anyone suggest a nice area, with a good school district that is racially diverse? Wouldn't hurt if a 24 HR Fitness and a Pappadeaux's was near by too..LOL! Just kidding. Thanks for your help!

Sugar Land without a doubt, schools are top notch & you will enjoy the much lower cost of living compared to Sacramento. Fort Bend County is the most racially diverse in Texas.

We enjoy living in Sugar Land. It is very diverse in terms of ethnicity but not so much in terms of socioeconomic status - median family income is high.

Pappadeaux is on the border of Sugar Land and Stafford with a Stafford address. There are two 24 Hour Fitness Clubs in Sugar Land but also a really nice Lifetime Fitness that I would recommend touring before you make a decision about which club to join.

There are a lot of good schools in Fort Bend ISD and some that are mediocre. The schools zoned to our neighborhood are Walker Station Elementary, Sartartia Middle School, and Stephen F. Austin High School. The elementary and middle schools are top notch and the high school is good. If your children are young, Austin might not be the high school they'd attend by the time your children reach high school age because the population growth here is high and more high schools will likely be built.

Parent reviews of the schools can be read at GreatSchools.net. Often I find the parent reviews more helpful than the quantitative rankings.

Houston area is so big and has many nice neighborhoods. It would be better if you could be more specific and say what area of town you will be working in. We could advise you better that way.

Will you be commuting to work? If so, that's at least as important as everything else you mentioned. Many newcomers to Houston pick an area based on how close it is to their job. You can find good areas with at least reasonable school district in practically every direction from downtown (and, yes, easy access to 24-HR fitness, Papadeaux, Bed, Bath & Beyond or whatever else you might fancy).

The commute, though, is going to be a key.
