Actually, it pretty much does (though maybe not 1 mi. inland in bay areas). Depending on the direction of the surge, it can back build at bays and actually be higher than at the coast. Of course the land is generally a bit higher in elevation as well. So this applies equally if you live along the bays in the storm surge area, not just along the coast. My house is at 23 ft. elevation and I am pretty worried about getting trapped (lower areas around me) or having water "lapping at my doorstep" like the state OEM guy said about folks in League City and parts of Friendswood. In addition, waves height is measured as being above the storm surge. So you can have a 15 ft. surge with 5-8 ft. waves which can cause problems.

Traffic isn't that bad. Surprisingly, there are plenty of southbound traffic on I 45. The line at Home Depot is about a mile long. Why do people wait til the last minute to buy emergency things? Maybe that's why they are called emergency things. It's a perfect day to be at the beach or the movies if you hate crowds .

The HEB at 99 and Fry is plumb outta bread. Not a loaf of any sort in sight. Almost out of canned chili too. Most people are exceptionally polite in the crowded store though, nicer than usual. Traffic is kinda crazy just around the 'hood. The line at our gas station is crazy, but there was a tanker refilling it. Two of my neighbors in Cinco are boarding up, the rest of us are kinda watching in amazement.

My next door neighbor is boarding up. He's the only guy in our entire neighborhood doing it. I went over to introduce myself since I've never met him and he was very nice...it is sad that I waited until an impending hurricane to meet my neighbor. He said that during a previous storm, there were tornadoes in the field behind our houses. Oh, great.
I had to buy something for my daughter's school this morning and I got caught in the grocery store lines with the last minute emergency shoppers. The lines were unreal but everyone was being polite and nice. My husband commented that if you have to be in an emergency situation, Texans are the best people with whom to experience it!

Track has moved slightly eastward.
Not good for Galveston/Galveston County, but this puts most of Houston out of the dirty side.
I think it'll shift eastward again and go in at Bolivar or High Island. No matter what, we're getting hurricane-force winds though.

ACE has lot of generators. I was just at the one off of hwy 59N and Aldine (mail rte.). They have at least 30 of them. They run around $600. (ouch!) The generators are actually in the parking lot by a couple of big trucks. You go in an tell them which one you want, then bring your slip outside and they will load it for you. Don't forget the motor oil, extension cords and gas cans. BTW, they are out of gas cans. ~K~

We boarded up for the first time ever ... but are staying put. After the last evacuation would rather hunker down and pray for the best than get stuck on a freeway somewhere. Although storm surge is the main concern - unfortunately, you have to be concerned about the crummy wooden fences that most tract builders use become projectiles plus the tons of junk some your neighbors are too lazy to put away.......................
