Holy crow, I just saw the Weather Channel and they've got that da*ned cone of uncertainty with Houston right in the frickin' middle of it. WTF? Why do they do this to me...give me a heart attack now, then the thing will change and side swipe Mexico or something...and then I have to go on blood pressure meds and some valium. LOL! *sigh*
*still heading out to get some bottled water*

Ignore The Sensationalist Hype Channel, formerly TWC. They had Gustav still barreling right through NOLA as a >Cat-3 until it was obvious to everyone it was going west of the city and weakening.

And if it comes time to evacuate, think of the people on the coast first. I'm looking at you, people in Cypress and The Woodlands and other parts inland.

Thank You! and I for one will look for folks even closer to the coast.

I just took a trip back in time to the hurricane that hit Galveston on Sept 8, 1900. Reading the personal account from a weatherman that experienced it was so interesting and sad. Check this out to read his and another account. The 1900 Storm: Galveston, Texas

Issac's Storm by Erik Larson is further good reading on this. Not only does it give a good account of the storm, but of how people thought around the turn of the 20th century, particularly in regards to weather.

Very good advise, I hope everyone will follow the zip codes if evacuation is necessary.

If Houston takes a direct hit how will the Montrose neighborhood be impacted?
Is Montrose prone to flooding? Have previous hurricanes damaged Montrose?? thanks

I'll reserve a complete answer for someone who's been there for one.
We haven't had a direct hit from a major hurricane since 1983 or any hurricane since 1989, and there are a lot of buildings around now that weren't there then. As for flooding, maybe the new entrenched 59 would take in some water and help keep the Montrose area from flooding? I don't know. We haven't really had much of a storm since that was finished. I think it was still being done when Tropical Storm Allison came in 2001.

Area around U of St. Thomas gets heavy street flooding - don't think it gets in houses though.

We'll keep this a temporary sticky for now until Ike figures out what he's gonna do and when he is gonna do it.
