It's most likely due to power loss if all they have are cordless phones that run off electricity.

marylea54, if you go to the radio station link (KTRH) and listen in, they have callers calling in from all over the metro area, giving updates. Someone may call in from the area you're wondering about.

They also have just plain phone jacks. Also don't answer their cell phones, no response from emails, just nothing.
Now I understand the eye is going right up I-45, that's right where my family lives!
Anyone know anything about Almeda-Genoa area? Do they have power?

I can't speak for the almeda-genoa area specifically, but I have a friend not too far from there and he's cool. Lots of wind, but everything seems okay.

The city officials told Houstoners to hunker down there and just stay home.
When Rita hit, the city told most people to evacuate from Houston, however more people died from evacuating than the actual hurricane. (around 100 poeple died while evacuating and 10 people died in the actual hurricane when it hit).

Most ALL of the Houston area and suburbs have now lost power.
It's also very common to loose cell phone service in a storm of this size.
I know it's hard not to worry... but just hang in there... I'm sure they're fine... just lost power and communications right now as the storm is right over the Houston area.
Take care and wishing the best for you and yours!

Thanks, that bit of information at least give me some relief. Probably they have lost power which is why they don't answer the phone or respond to emails. I need to go to bed now, worrying won't help anyone!
Thanks again for the info!

Right. Houston is a very large city. Parts of the metro area are on the coast, but much of it is pretty far inland. With Rita, Houstonians evacuated who didn't need to evacuate, obstructing the roads for the people along the coast who were coming up south of us who really did need to get out of harm's way. Cars ran out of gas and idled on the side of the road, it took thirteen hours to go what would normally be a one hour drive, people and pets died in their cars from the heat. It wasn't pretty. City officials wanted to avoid that catastrophe this time.
