Relocate.
Hurricanes will continue to hit the Texas coast, and yes, Houston will be hit again eventually. Don't let this stop you if you've already made plans. We're talking about 2 big hurricanes in the last 25 years...this is not a trend.
Of course, I just noticed something brewing just south of Puerto Rico
National Hurricane Center
...all eyes open again folks.

Isn't there some theory that global weather changes will make hurricanes more frequent?

I wanted to pop in and warn ya'll about identity theft. After Katrina someone, most likely one of those "Disaster Relief" workers, helped themselves to my Mother's papers in her destroyed home. I was fortunate to catch an $11,000.00 bill for a credit account my Mom didn't have. The people who opened the account were up in NY state and had opened up three other accounts before I could put a lock on her credit.
I just want ya'll to be aware that there are people out there looking to pick your bones and run to disaster areas looking to capitalize. When they let you in to go through your destroyed home, bless your hearts, make sure to get any paperwork that would help someone commit identity theft. Best wishes.

That's what some people said after Katrina (which was a pretty bad year all around) but then we had a couple of years of almost no major hurricanes hitting the US. I personally don't buy it. My stepdad is a meterologist and he says it's bunk.

Well, that's reassuring because our friends are teasing us that everywhere my family goes, natural disasters follow. We moved to Seattle and a major earthquake hit. Then we moved to Colorado and they had their worst winter in 10 years. And then we moved to Houston.

This is funny but I know it's not really. I think you have Murphy following you.

So that explains it. I like you and all, but maybe you could look into moving to Dallas or somewhere else?

Ha, funny! My husband says we need to stop planning vacations, even, because just thinking about going to a place seems to be a problem, too. We were booked for a South Padre Island vacation and the condos were so badly damaged by the previous hurricane, we couldn't go.
There don't seem to be recurring disasters, though, so Houston is probably safe now.

you are referring to a phenomenon known a the **** theory (edited for the official name, which, is OUR surname)
Here is how the theory applies....just a few examples....
1) If you are standing in the shortest line at the grocery store, it will without a doubt be the longest, due to reasons beyond your imagination and control..
Hubby and I have a little song we quietly sing in these circumstances..."Cuz we're the *** do do do do,...Cuz we're the *** do do do do
2) If an problem related to the national economy arises (savings & loan meltdown mid '90's, current mortgage meltdown, etc.) we will be contemplating selling property (this is how the home we sold 2/08 originally became rental property for 12 years, ultimately becoming the catalyst for our 1031 exchange for the acquisition of our Conroe TX future home (a bit of silver lining)
3) Finally, and maybe most important to the national psyche, absolutely that of locals (no matter where *local* is) ....
....If you want your Football, Baseball, Hockey, Ping Pong, etc...team to have a fighting chance...please, for your own sakes...do not tell us! We have been rooting for the SF Giants for a few years...they now suck butt!! Same for the SF 49'rs...So here is our agreed plan for Houston, so they are spared a similar fate...
We, while quietly rooting for Houston (doesn't matter what team, sport, etc),
will cheer the other team on with extreme enthusiasm, thereby insuring said Houston team has a fighting prayer!!
Cuz we're the *** do do do do...Cuz we're the *** do do do do.....

Topaz, when I read your comment, I thought...are you talking about my husband and me???? My Dad says the same thing about us...When my husband and I were looking for places to relocate once our business sold, several years ago, we "discovered" the most wonderful place in Fl,....Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor....then, Hurricane Charlie found them. We traveled to Louisiana, hello Katrina, then visited Galveston, hello Rita. Last year we sold and moved and now live in Clearlake, and....Ike came calling. Since we've been here 14 months, I'm not taking responsibility for the storm...if it had happened last year, then, well, I would HAVE to ...but, I think I'm in the clear now! (Please, no throwing tomatoes!)
We rode the storm out...sort of interpreted the "mandatory evacuation" (which our zip was in) statement by the emergency mgt/mayor when they asked if we could "shelter in place" if you are not in a low lying area prone to flooding. Well, we are up from Clearlake, across from NASA, and thanks be to God, we had no damage, save for a roof leak.

We're really trying to figure out what to do now. Our lease is up in January, and we don't want to renew in the apt. Had been thinking about Bal Harbour, off Nasa 1, and are wanting to get in to see the condition of the neighborhood, but so far it's blocked off.
whew...so many thoughts and feelings.
