As you continue the recovery efforts outdoors, you'll probably want to invest in some OFF or Cutter bug repellant, and apply liberally before you go outside. The mosquitos on the SE side are Port Arthur size (double size), and there are tons of them.

Also now's maybe a good time to get your dogs tested for heartworm and get them on some prevention meds, at least until the first cold snap arrives.

We traveled to Louisiana, hello Katrina, then visited Galveston, hello Rita. Last year we sold and moved and now live in Clearlake, and....Ike came calling. Since we've been here 14 months, I'm not taking responsibility for the storm...if it had happened last year, then, well, I would HAVE to ...but, I think I'm in the clear now! (Please, no throwing tomatoes!)

We rode the storm out...sort of interpreted the "mandatory evacuation" (which our zip was in) statement by the emergency mgt/mayor when they asked if we could "shelter in place" if you are not in a low lying area prone to flooding. Well, we are up from Clearlake, across from NASA, and thanks be to God, we had no damage, save for a roof leak.

We're really trying to figure out what to do now. Our lease is up in January, and we don't want to renew in the apt. Had been thinking about Bal Harbour, off Nasa 1, and are wanting to get in to see the condition of the neighborhood, but so far it's blocked off.

whew...so many thoughts and feelings.

Welcome to Texas! ( I think) Just as a heads up...Bal Harbour is low...just like the rest of the area over there on ClearLake. We have friends in BH....got 5 ft of water in their downstairs. If you want to get on the water....look HIGH! We are out on Taylor Lake (right off of ClearLake) and sit 18 ft above sea level. Water surged 15 feet! Waaaaaaay to close for comfort! But at least, no water in my house!

Dogs are safer left outside than indoors during a hurricane, Mom2Feebs? Is that really what you said? I guess if no one is there with the dog, and the house completely floods or burns down, then the dog may have been better off outside... however, the NHC clearly states that pets should be brought indoors during storms:

Sorry to hear of your friends water damage. We looked at a couple and realized that some are lower and closer to the water. There is one listed on a realestate site that update it's listing to say that it was high and dry with no damage from Ike. I love the Bal Harbour feel...on the water, canal, in a price range we can afford, great pool and tennis courts...but, ughhhh! How do you KNOW what to do? DH and I are feeling so stuck..we don't know which way to go to get started. Do you have any idea how Lakewood Yacht Club did? It is so low there too. A pitty, for we were just considering joining.

Reading back over the Ike posts. Amazing how some were so on point.
