Well, we lost 3/4 of our dead fighting the Germans, and killed a heck of a lot more Germans than Japanese during WWII. The Germans musta been the ones who attacked Pearl Harbor.

Perhaps this will be the catalyst that brings gambling to Texas. Legalize it on the coastal islands, and Galveston will be rebuilt in a matter of weeks...

Galveston will live on.
Texas will rise up.
Belushi rules.
Why do I feel so bi-polar on this thread?

Galveston will be back because despite the risks, people will always desire to live on the waterfront. The homes that survived were the newer homes with the newer building codes and codes will most likely become even more strict. Those older homes, some in good shape and others dilapidated on stilts were swept away. But, I think they'll come back as NOLA is (for the wealthy). Those older homes were in some families for years. Even if the price inflates - Galveston was (and will be again) booming because it will still be some of the cheapest waterfront real estate available for people. Does anyone know for sure how some of the new luxury hi-rises near east beach did?

Ahh, a Daddy Tillman fan. I see you are from Dallas, home to Anthony and Mary. I was a manager for Tillman's dad for several years - such different personalities deep down! When did Tillman buy the Balinese??? Must have been amazingly recent since a lawyer bought it around 2000 or 2001 - can't remember exactly - just remember the excitement some had when they started to see activity there. The Fertittas were certainly involved with the Balinese Room in the past - I heard some fun family stories. The destruction of the Balinese has been heartbreaking for many.

Property in Galveston doesn't get washed away every 5 years - not even close. Having lived in Galveston for about 6 years and knowing many people who still live there, I have some issues with the island, but it is fairly economical for those who want to leave in a beach town (not necessarily for those who want beachfront property, but with the island being so narrow, no one is amazing far from the water if they really want to get there). While devastating to many right now, I think things overall will turn out for the less-wealthy of the island (at least the less-wealthy homeowners who had insurance). Run-down homes may end up being rebuilt better than ever. Some people will milk FEMA for everything they can get - heck, many people on the island did that when Rita came through even though they really didn't get much, if any, damage.

Does anyone know if the Bishops Palace got any damage? I remember hearing that during the 1900 storm that's where a lot of people road out the storm. And what about the Moody Mansion? Just wondering how they held up during Ike.

Galveston wasn't finished after the 1900 storm, which was probably the worst natural disaster in American history. New Orleans makes even less sense but people are trying to fix it and move back in. This probably means that Fertitta is going to have a field day (if he can get a loan, anyway).
