Most people I talk to are taking it well and say - that when you build on the island, you know that day is coming, you just hope they come far and few between.

Yeah, I lived out there for a while (and still have my house) and thought the oldtimers were joking when they said, we just wait for a hurricane every 20 years or so to remodel - no sense in replacing the roof or whatever until it really needs to be done... Glad I contracted for siding replacement before Ike - but with the work to be started in mid October! Lucky timing - hope they can honor the contract pricing and schedule...

Hi I have posted in previous threads about the same topic, basically me and 8 other family members are coming over to Houston for a wedding in December. We are staying for 10 days and originally had a house booked in Galveston which was destroyed. We are now in a bit of a panic about places to rent as most of the places are along the same coast.
We don’t want to be more than an hour away from Houston itself, this is why Galveston was ideal. I have enquired into a few other properties and there are a few that are still ok in Galveston. As its hard for me to find out from the UK, would anyone suggest that it is still ok to stay in Galveston area or is it worthwhile looking elsewhere? What about Surfside Beach?
Thanks for your help!!

Check with the Seascape Condos in Galveston. They are right on the beach and amazingly the damage done was a lot lower than expected. They might have units ready to rent out by December. There is also a Galveston forum you can visit and get more detailed info from people that are ON the island and see pictures. Very easy to find as it is just the name Galveston dot com.

FWIW, one of the early ZZTop albums had a song about it or made a reference to it.

The Germans did not bomb Pearl Harbor, the Japanese did.

Honestly, I don't get why people spend all that money to live on Galveston Island's beaches. It has nasty water and an even worse beach.

I think you may want to do a little research on Galveston pre-1900 storm. It had a population of considerably more than 10k (heck, death toll estimates from the 1900 storm were between 6k - 12k, depending on the source) and it was far more than "shacks and dirt roads".
