Default Is Galveston Finished?

As we all know Galveston took a hard hit from hurricane ike. Pretty much everything is devastated. I think people will think twice about living on a beach and investing in property there so the recovery process could take years. The Balinese Room (Historic Nightclub) was completely destroyed. Do you guys think it will be rebuilt? What do you guys think the future is looking like for Galveston Island?

I'd be interested in others thoughts, too. My husband's ex sis-in-law evacuated Galveston twice, after Rita and Ike. I don't know when I'll get to talk to her again but I'm wondering her feelings on it. Her house got some water in it but is otherwise okay, I think, I'm not sure though. Her 18 year old son stayed behind after she and the girls left but he's okay, although he's stuck there now.

Building codes should be revised for coastal homes. Look at the pictures of the devastation. Just piles of sticks. I been building/remodling homes for 30 years and I know a block home is 10 times stronger then stick built. Even a stick built with a red brick exterior is 5 times stronger. I have no answers for those homes built on stilts but I am certian building methods are available for those too.

In the desert south west no one has fences. We all have cinder block walls and code calls for every 4th hole to be filled with loose concrete. Why cant homes be built this way. There might still be thousands more homes still standing today.

Now is the time to adopt new building codes.......before rebuilding starts.

Galveston will live on..........................

Yes, Galveston will be rebuilt. What else are they supposed to do? Move to another beach? New Orleans was rebuilt after Katrina. Los Angeles was rebuilt after the Northridge earthquake. I have some fence damage. I will rebuild too. HOA won't leave me alone if I don't.

Look at the homes that made it through okay and figure out what was done right on those.

One thing I've noticed is that a lot of homes washed away from the stilts, with the stilts remaining. Maybe just raising the height of the house would do wonders.

Finished? Was America finished when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Galveston wasn't finished after the 1900 storm, which was probably the worst natural disaster in American history. New Orleans makes even less sense but people are trying to fix it and move back in. This probably means that Fertitta is going to have a field day (if he can get a loan, anyway).

Galveston won't be finished until it's under the Gulf of Mexico for good, and even then it'll probably be on stilts.

With the seawall, Galveston can and will recover, eventually. Conversely, the Bolivar Peninsula is DONE.
