Default Economy effect on Houston job market.

Today at my job in NY, a few people were laid off due the economy. At one of my friends job they also laid off 30 workers. (And this is the healthcare field). Luckily I still have a job and wasn't in line to be laid off. This made me wonder is the same type of situations going on in Houston! It scares me to leave my job and travel across the country to a place where I can be laid off at any givin moment because I'm the new employee. How is the job market right now in Houston? Is
Houston feeling the major effects of the economy and the job market like us in Ny?

My recruiter friends say the job market is still strong, however they have been seeing more hesitation in hiring, which they attribute to the uncertainty in what the economy will be sending our way.

And remember, even though Houston isn't as oil-driven as it used to be, oil still does play a decently large part of our economy, so if the price drops, drops, drops, then there will definitely be an impact in hiring and other sectors that respond to the wages earned in the oil industry.

I know plain vanilla Java developers and 'generic support groups' are being axed everywhere. its quite ugly out there if youre not in a niche market, not a problem solver, not a key player and dont have your company's balls with 2009 targets.
the medical field hmm, everyday theres a big neon sign at West Houston hospital "RNs needed, sign-on bonuses"

Houston job market is still pretty strong overall, but there will be hiring freezes and some layoffs here and there as individual companies make the decisons that they feel will be correct for their particular market.

I talked to a recruiter about 2 weeks ago and she was telling me that she still sees a pretty strong demand right now.

I'll tell you one thing, it's bad for teachers. I didn't sign back up with Alief ISD because I couldn't stand the issues and their nonsense. I haven't been able to find a job anywhere. And I teach middle school math.

What strong demand is in need? I have tried to find a position in collections, csr, human resources but no luck...or nothing above 15 an hr if even that. And those were all agencies and couldn't guarantee placement. That stopped me from relocating right now.

I believe the ecomomy here is still strong. Housing is cheap, gas prices are going down. I am in oil and gas, and pretty much "recession/depression" proof.
If you're an engineer....you're pretty much safe too. Tons of jobs with great pay/benefits.
Check out the Houston Chronicle online (www.chron.com) for jobs.
I always say, if you can't find a job here in Houston, you aren't looking hard enough.

Very much not true. lay offs have already started in oil and gas due to falling prices. Anyone who thinks oil and gas is recession proof wasn't in the business 1982-1985, 1989-1992, or 1998 and 1999.
