I'm not sure, but I remember spending like $50 for two. The place looks drabby these days.

There is a place called "Chicago Italian Beef" off of 610 and Airline, right before you get to 45. (No the neighborhood isn't great but I went for the food). I researched and found her online about 2 years ago. The lady that owns the place is from Chicago or her family is from there. I haven't been in about a year but her Italian Beef's hit the spot! The giardiniera is waaaay too hot and really not supposed to taste like that but the sandwich is pretty good. For a combo it was about $6.50. When you tell her you want it "dipped" she actually knows what you mean......She'll ask you if you want it on the side or you can tell her to do so.

I know I've gotten off of your subject but I'm pretty sure she has gyros because she tried to specialize in Chicago food. She has Vienna Hot Dogs, Polishes as well. (Polishes weren't good but the hot dogs were ok) She's had to expand to basically everything...I guess if you aren't from Chicago you don't understand why this food is sooo great and missed so the demand isn't in H-Town.

I'm from Chicago as well so I understand your pain.

Man I miss Garrett's Popcorn......As I digress!

Call first before you go to make sure she is still open.......Like I said it's been a while since I've gone.

Didn't read all the post so sorry about repeating myself....I think you need to go to see for yourself. Another lady told me that there polishes were good. I went and was highly disappointed.

I haven't really found a place that slaps on the meat like Chicago. Houston doesn't have "sloppy" Greek restaurants like you are thinking about that good old gyro.

Yes they do have Gyros but waaaay over priced. I stopped ordering them because I always feel like I'm not getting my money's worth since I've lived and eaten the "Chicago way".

Greek-American, while elements of food you eat in Greece are salty taken individually what you don't get is a plate of cheap gunk dressed in cheap ass olive oil and covered in rock salt to disguise the fact it doesn't really taste of anything. Unlike the food at nico nicos.

On a more positive note I'd like to recommend

'Rita's Cafe' out on Dairy Ashford south of I-10. Great Lebanese food and a proper Gyro sandwich is $5 and exellent service. Nico nicos isn't fit to lick their boots.

Default Does it matter now?

I think the OP got his gyros back in Chicago... This thread started in October, 2008; I think the OP has left Houston already, from what I recall about his posts.

Tarpon Springs, FL has some great Greek food. It's definitely become my favorite ethnic district in terms of its vibe and layout.

But I've found a place here in Houston that's just about as good as anything I've had in Tarpon. Ekko's Greek American deli. Pretty good gyros. Not the best, but very good, compared to hyped places like Nikko's. Corner of Richmond and Sage, I think.

Rita's Cafe you mean? I've eaten pretty much everything on the menu, it's very good 'real' food. I liked the super hot Armenian kebab particularly.

I've also seen lines of people waiting to pay $12+ for a plate of salt and poor quality meat at nico nicos but hey, what do you expect, it isn't the smartest demographic I've ever lived in the vicinity of.

Nice. I'll try the kebab.

You can find people of all demographics anywhere in Houston, but the food at Niko's is a bit overrated. I like the lemon potatoes though.
