2000$ earnest money and I made them do 1500$ in upgrades. Would I have to pay the upgrade cost of 1500 also incase I back out?

I think the earnest money is all they can ding you for, but I would negotiate with them first before blowing 2g's. Point out the obvious: why should you pay more for less and not just leave and go elsewhere if they don't help you out? (this is how you present it to them)

my friend walked on a deal and lost a lot more than you, but got a better, larger, nicer, inventory home in a nicer section for the same price...for him it was worth it to stick it to the other builder. with all the weird upgrades and things he put in....that home will sit for awhile.
