Nice area to live in between Houston & Lufkin?
My job will be based out of Lufkin area and my husband more than likely will be working in Houston in his field. Anyone know of a half way point that's nice to live for a couple nearing 40 with a 6 yr old son in 1st grade. So good schools are on the top of the list. We love fishing and camping, so it would be nice to have a lake nearby. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Livingston or Huntsville based on half way points.
Going into Houston in the mornings US 59 from Livingston would be much easier on a persons sanity than I-45 from Huntsville.

Livingston if you don't mind the small town bible thumpers that populate the area.

Livingston is out if that's what's going on there! Then what about Huntsville?

sorry. I-45 is total hell with the construction going on around Conroe. I would look at routes along 59.

Livingston would be the halfway point, that will be one heck of a commute either way.

Not trying to be noisy... but...
My husband and I just moved from Lufkin to Katy for a job opportunity. Will you be working in Lufkin on a daily basis or is it once a week or something that is less frequent. The reason I ask is because I could get from Lufkin to Humble in 1:35 min easily, even in the morning. (I did several early morning drives to the medical center) I honestly think if you only have to make occasional trips to Lufkin it might be worth it to look at Kingwood or possibly even the Woodlands. I could be at the Woodlands Mall in about 1:45 by using 242...
Just thought I would make the suggestion, we are so happy our daughter was able to start school here, there are many more opportunities here than in Lufkin and Livingston will only be worse.
Good Luck and if you have any questions about Lufkin I lived there eight years.

I agree with the others on Livingston being the half way point while having some of the necessary services close by. Livingston is a small town with a population of about 7000. A little large for that "everyone knows everyone" town but small enough to fit right in with ease.
Having a lake nearby would be about 10 to 60 minutes way to my beloved Lake Livingston depending on where you want to access it. It is rated as one of the top 10 Catfish lakes in the country. It will take you every bit of an hour and a half to get to south Houston from the town of Livingston during average heavy drive times. It's a real easy drive even during the worst of rush hours till you get to the Kingwood area. And that area should no longer be an issue if that construction ever ends there. You will have most of 59 all to yourself in any direction at any time of the day. The only time 59 gets heavy is Sunday night southbound and even then the speed limit is met or exceeded.
For me to commute over an hour one way is a small price to pay for the opportunity to wake up to a 30 mile view of the lake while eating my breakfast every day and never having to get into a car to go fishing. I hope the driving never gets old.
Your other half way point on another larger town might be Cleveland but I would not recommend it. It is a dump with high crime and bad schools.
Let us know how you make out..........

Sorry, but this is small-town Texas. Livingston, Huntsville, wherever. Quarter in one hand, two dimes and a nickel in the other. Just keep to yourself on religious matters and just give a "no, thanks" or a "religion is a very private matter to me etc." kind of response if somebody fails to do the same.
The Livingston area, extending maybe southward to Shepherd or Cleveland, is the only logical choice here. Lufkin is about 120 miles away from the center of Houston.

Frankly, IMO, this situation would never work out long term. Given the choice, I'd live in Lufkin over Houston in a heartbeat. It's a neat mid-size town with a country appeal to it. Houses are affordable and large plots of land nearby are also still affordable with the city of Lufkin nearby for shopping conveniences and Houston is an easy Saturday trip to stores not available in Lufkin or Nacogdoches.
I spent 2 years of my life in Diboll, which is 10 miles south of Lufkin, and I keep in touch with people there. It's a great place (IMO) to raise a child far from the stench and influence of the big city.
