Default Weekend Getaway

We are new to Houston and are looking to getaway for the weekend. Are there any areas, other than New Braunfels, Gruene, etc. that you can rent cabins and just kind of be secluded. We have a dog so we have to take him with us. If the area you are thinking is in those areas, do you have any specific recomendations on who to rental cabins/cottages from? Thanks so much!

Gruene,TX is nice place to visit as well as The Gruene Hall.
Good Chicken Fried Steak
The Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar in Gruene Historic District

Also look into Washington on the Brazos.

Despite the weather being too cool to swim, the Frio river area has a lot of nice cabins and vacation areas.

Our family always stays at River Haven. Make sure to try to reserve a cabin overlooking the river from the cliff.

River Haven Cabins - Frio River Fun, Log Cabins, Hill Country at it's Best

The OP asked for recommendations OTHER then Gruene and New Braunfels yet that is what people are recommending. The OP also wants places she can take her dog and every recommendation posted are places where dogs are forbidden. Some state parks allow dogs but never ever in the cabins. Their loss since 80% of Americans travel with pets.

But the poster who recommended The Grist Mill Restaurant I say thanks. I will put that on my short list of places to visit and explore. That place looks awesome !

Since you were suggesting areas of Gruene/New Braunfels then go here:

Little Rocky Lodge and Resort - The Jewel on Lake Whitney!
Dogs are welcome in the cabins and the rental boats and the lake is beautiful.

Most hotels today take pets. But most parks are still living in the dark ages and dont. If a place dont take pets then do not patronize them. They will get the hint some day. I would much rather be around all those dogs then screaming crying annoying bratty spoiled kids any day. Dogs do less damage then kids too.

Have a great trip.......

You should look into places up in Deep East Texas around Nacogdoches or Lufkin...or even something as close as Lake Livingston. The only place to stay that immediately comes to mind is http://www.pinecreeklodge.com/ but I'm sure there are many others.
