How do you like Houston?
Houston is one of my options, but I'm concerned with the dislike that some have expresssed for Houston
How is Houston for singles (early 30's)? Is there much of a nightlife, or is everything too spread out?
How easy is it to branch out and make friends in Houston if you don't have any relatives there? How friendly are people?
How does Houston compare to Dallas for the young professional? Does Dallas have a better singles scene and friendlier people?

Dallas has a slight edge with the singles scene & nightlife because the metropolitan area is some 600,000 people larger when including Fort Worth.
Houston can handle its own though with no problem in both respects. Houston is considered by many as being more down to earth & less pretentious than its prettier little sister to the north. Its also a world away in diversity.
You shouldn't want for anything in either city as both have enough to keep you busy for a long time.
Myself, I much prefer Houston's semi-tropical climate & geographical diversity with palm trees & piney forest all wrapped up in one city. Dallas is just dry, flat to rolling prairie with sparse vegetation in the outlying areas.

DFW is far more spread out than Houston. People from Fort Worth never go to Dallas and vice versa. Houston gets alot of bad rep but trust me you will not regret Houston if you're young. The nightlife is incredible. Alot of it is concentrated either in Downtown or Uptown. Houston truly is a impressive city especially if you're expectations are low to start with.

Well I checked into your past questions because sometimes one can provide better information if one is more informed.
But rather then wasting time answering your questions and you just move on to asking the same exact questions in the next city as you have done so many times I will just leave it be.
Between Canada, Seattle, DC, Puget Sound, Chicago, Virginia and Seattle if you cant find an Asian community then you aint lookin.
If you are serious then you should just do some traveling to find your path in life. No one on these forums can help you.

I think just because the OP has asked this question in other forums doesn't mean he/she isn't serious with the question regarding this city. Sometimes people are just looking to make a big change in life and deciding upon several cities you don't know anything about - sometimes asking this question in many cities is a good way to get a feel and perhaps help one to decide which city(ies) he/she should visit when they get near decision time. It's rather untrue to say "no one on these forums can help you." They might be able to help him/her decide which cities deserve a visit or should stay in the running.

You can't compare Dallas to Houston - That's Yankee Country up there! (j/k)
For Houston:
Mid-Town/Downtown area will be the place you want to hang out with others in your age group and profession. That area is packed weekday evenings for happy hour. I like the area and frequently go for lunch more often than the ocassional cocktails.
Friendly is as friendly does.
Texas used to be a much friendlier state...but attitudes have changed for the worse IMO. (mine included, unfortuneately) Most folks who live here are not from here. (Just ask around if they are Native Houstonians-you won't find many). There is an average of 35,000 new ppl moving into the Houston each year!
If you love crowds, summers that feel like Turkish baths, rude drivers, traffic jams, 2 seasons - hot & hotter, evacating for Hurricanes with 2 million other drivers, dogging non-stop construction on freeways & suburbs, trash on the freeways, high electricity rates (many times you wll be running your AC on Christmas Day), flooding, graffiti tagged signs & walls (starting to look alot like LA in some areas), fleas, roaches the size of mice, mosquitoes, and a beach's that smell, trashed, (Galveston) water so brown you can't see your feet 6 inches under the water, and G-D knows WHAT is in that water now...(Don't go in the water with open cuts) then by all means...
Houston is where you want to live!!
Make a trip or 2..do your research extensively before moving here. You will find alot of information on these boards, good & bad. Good luck!
I didn't even mention the illegals...
Signed,
A native Houstonian

Yikes cherrymagic. In the end I wasn't sure if you being sarcastic or what. Other then the traffic it ain't that bad in Houston. Believe me.....I lived in much worse places.....places that are well bragged about as "thee" place to be. Well they ain't.
I only been to Dallas a few times and I could not wait to get out. I did however stay up in Lewisville for a week in Sept. to visit my long lost cousin I have not seen n 32 years. He lived in Carrollton just outside of Dallas. While crusing around just sightseeing I saw nothing Dallas has over Houston. Nothing. I would rather live in Lewisville where we stayed which was a great little town rather then Dallas. And there ain't no Yankees in Dallas. I dont even like that word. The damn war is over so get over it.
It is possible Texas used to be more friendly as you say. Yes there are gobs and gobs of implants from all over the place relocating here to escape the snow, cold, bad job climate, high taxes, overwhelming govt control, expensive cost of goods and on and on. All these new implants are going to change the general human attitude.
I am happy to say though that if you get outside the city where I am then you will find nothing but old time Texas charm that are generations old. No outsiders (except me) and only the same ol thing going with little change.
Houston is better then Dallas.

Thanks all for your responses! My company may be transferring me to a different city. If I get the job, it could be in Houston or Dallas. Is there a community where other young single professionals (30's) live lively area with nightlife - is this area midtown/downtown. Any other areas?
