young, african american woman who wants to move from Pittsburgh to Houston, TX or Charlotte,NC
Hi, I'm a 23 year old, single, with no kids woman who wants to move in the summer of 2009. This coming May I will be graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Business Management. Before I move anywhere I plan on having a job and an apartment to reside in. I'm saving my money up now and will be able to pay $700 in rent. My problem is that I don't know what city to reside in. Pittsburgh is a nice small city, but the opportunities are low. I want to move to a city with a decent about of opportunities and a lot of night life. My neighbor moved to Charlotte, NC and loves it to death. My older cousin (age 40) just moved back to Houston and told me I would love it down there. I been to both locations and fell in love with both of the cities. I just can't decide which city to choose. I've been doing my research, but want to get some opinions from others. I'm looking for a city with good opportunities, decent job market, a lot of cute guys (lol...i'm single), fun nightlife (i love to dance and go clubbing), and a city with always something to do. Thank-you for your help...all post will truly be appreciated.

Charlotte is beautiful, but with the economy what it is I might be somewhat cautious of moving there. I doubt that you will have a problem securing employment in the city of Houston.

Isn't Charlotte's metropolitan area about the same size (if not actually a little smaller) than Pittsburgh?
I mean, I agree that Charlotte is a cute, charming and up-and-coming city/metropolitan area but I don't think, size wise, it's any larger than Pittsburgh overall.
I do agree that with the financial industry being in particular poor shape these days, you might want to at least be a little cautious with Charlotte due to its prominence as a banking center.
As for Houston, relatively speaking, the job market is in at least decent shape but it also depends on your particular field as to what jobs are easier to secure here. As for $700 in rent, if you're looking at two bedrooms, you're probably looking at renting a place outside the city limits. Anything decent for $700 with two bedrooms is going to generally be in a more somewhat suspect area (not necessarily horrible but at least shaky). If we're talking one bedroom, then you do have more options in that price range inside the city limits.

I'm pretty much in the same boat you are in except I'm only 20 and I haven't graduated just yet. I will be graduating with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Psycholgy. Houston and North Carolina are in my top choices as well. If you are going to be working in HR I think Houston has alot of opportunities for people with degrees in Business in general. So I think Houston could be a good pick for you.

Just a devil's advocate thought here... Why do you want to move to either of these places? Do you not have family or friends anywhere? I would never move to another city just because of a job. A job is just something to allow you to do the other things in life that you want. It pays the rent, buys food and transportation. It isn't something to rotate your life around.
I always say WORK where you LIVE. Not the other way around. You can never replace the time lost away from family and friends.
Now, if you're completely unattached with no friends and your family has all passed away, well, then you have a clean slate. But that doesn't represent many people.

He speaks the truth. We moved to Houston almost 2 years ago for my husbands job. Although I love where we live in Sugar Land and the opportunities here are great, I soooooo miss my family and friends back home. We are looking to move back SOON. It was nice to try this out and a good financial decision for the short term, but family is what means most to me. I think my husband has finally realized that and is on board to move home too. Can't wait to get back to my family and friends

I love my family very much and all but I have absolutely NO desire to live in my hometown of Memphis, TN. I'm young and single and have my whole life ahead of me. I want to live somewhere different. Memphis is the last place I want to be.

I have a relative in Houston, Tx and have friends in Charlotte. I really don't have a lot of friends, but I am close and love my family. Just because I move doesn't mean that I won't still be still close to my family. I'm moving because Pittsburgh doesn't have a lot of job opportunity. I want to move to a bigger city with better opportunities. I also want a change. If I could pack up my whole family and move them with me trust me I would. But in reality I can't, because most of them love pittsburgh and content in their lives. That doesn't mean I can't go venture out and see what else is out in the world. If I get to the point where it's unbearable and get extremely homesick I can always move back to Pittsburgh. Just because a person wants to venture to another city doesn't mean they don't have any family or friends. I want to see another aspect in life. I know how Pittsburgh lifestyle is, so I want to see and experience another lifestyle. I will always be able to move back and visit, and they will have a place to visit too. I figure life is too short and I'm young, single, and don't have any kids...so this is the time for me to experience something new. It's time for me to leave the nest and see what else is out there.
