Great forum! I've been thru Houston a few times but never spent much time there. I'm thinking of starting my appliance repair business there. I'm semi retired and have some income so I could do ok with 2 to 3 calls a day. There's just my wife and myself [she's much younger than I] and hopefully she would be able to find something in the way of work. I know the economy is going downhill but that means that folks will repair rather than replace. Some repairs can be deferred but you need to have your fridge, washer, dryer, and stove working; especially the fridge. Basically, I would be a one man shop working out of the house. I have probably a billion questions but I would like to start with some commentary on business conditions in Houston. I'm also looking at Phoenix and South florida. Houston appeals to me simply because of the size. The large low income populace might be a problem. All comments/suggestions are appreciated. TIA

I don't know anything about your industry, but I did want to wish you good luck and hopefully you'll get some good input here!

Thanks, I appreciate your input. The business is simple; you work out of your house, repair any major appliance, offer flexible scheduling & reasonable rates. Which appliance in your house needed repair recently? How much did it cost you?

I'm from New Jersey and I had a gas dryer fixed last week, it cost me $120.00 total to get it fixed.

Can someone enlighten me about access to townhomw/codo communities? My primary marketing will be door hangers. Do a lot of communities have no slicitor/no vendor rules?

I'm a computer programmer and I have an electronics degree. If you move to Houston would you be interested in free help one day a week in return for teaching me the trade while I'm working with you? I know how to work and I have repaired washers from time to time. I have professional tools. I also knows that experience counts for a lot.
