What's with the midtown security?
Dined at Cyclone Anaya's on a Saturday night - and they have two permanent HPD officers stationed by the door as you walk in. Has something happened downtown or even at that restaurant that would warrant that. Restaurants don't do that for no reason -- anyone live in that area and know what's up?

HPD is always around Midtown. It's more Bum Control than anything. Around the holidays there's more attention to cleanup and drunkard control.
It's not like they've found a body shoved in a manhole or anything. <pssst Sugarland>

I see them patrol in midtown a lot but I rarely see them hired by a restaurant to work inside. Not that I mind - I like their presence but seems odd a restaurant would hire two - that's pricey for the establishment.

There is a small police office in back of the Post apartment building. Usually its for a few officers who walk/bike around the area. They are usually involved with vagrant control and to keep the troublemakers in the 4th ward in line. Tends to be some break ins on cars around the holidays.

HPD officers working in a restaurant are not "on duty" per se, they are working an "extra job." That means that the restaurant is paying them an hourly wage to be there. If you want to know the answer to your question specifically about that establishment, you might call the manager. He/she is the one who hired the officers.

Yes I know they are working extra jobs so that is why I commented that it is pricey for the restaurant. Just not sure how upfront mgmt would be with me if I asked -- most places don't want to tell you about actual problems.

HPD officers are allowed to freelance as security? Are they allowed to wear HPD uniforms as well?
