The citywide thing is not happening, at least not with Earthlink. They are pulling out. They are supposed to pay $5M in penalties for pulling out of the contract.

I have Comcast cable internet and I am connected at 11 mps, wireless.

If you want a tech savvy web startup kind of place, Houston is the wrong number.

Not so true. Check out Houston Technology Center - Assisting Houston Emerging Technology Entrepreneurs who has supported over 1000 tech start ups.

I believe I said web startups, the link did not list the companies, but I do already know that we have medical and energy related tech companies.

I wish we have cooler web2 or B2C web companies, stumbleupon, twitter, pandora, google, facebook, ebay, amazon kind of companies, like the young gold rush win big or crash and burn kind of culture. The entrepreneurial startups here seem to be by older folks, and not that much buzz and excitement due to its more serious nature of business

That web site is pretty worthless. I want to see the actual people that were helped by these jokers. They are quick to take your money, but as for helping you, they are a joke. They are like you manager saying "I value your input".

You best bet is to get on with the local Chamber of Commerce and avoid doing tech work unless you can get some venture capital together with a real good biz plan. Just starting up a company that does web pages or deploying networks for other businesses is going to keep you bored and hungry in Houston because you are not going to find any work. I learned all of this the hard way and have a nice fat bankruptcy on my credit to show for all my hard work.

I have said before here that Houston three growth industries are health care, energy, and ambulance chasers (lawyers). Unless you can get a job related to one of those fields, you will be a job hopper in Houston and not have a real career.

I do want a tech savvy Web start up kind of place, and I want it to be Houston! Or more relevant to me, Sugar Land. There is certainly enough consumer demand and income here...what's the problem with getting better technology?

Slightly off topic but I just got a letter that Comcast is raising their broadband rates by $3 a month. (at the same time they are capping usage)

God we need a REAL alternative badly. I so wish U-Verse would come into New Territory. I HATE these jerks at ComCrap.

Comcast is The Suck. It locks up and blacks out all the time. How did they screw up Road Runners lines so badly?

My DSL through AT&T is $25/mo and it suits me fine. Maybe look into that.

I'm not running a business. I'm also not doing any serious videogaming, not streaming HD porno movies nor doing BitTorrent downloading... But if I were doing any of that, I'd probably be complaining.
