Default Out of towner to be in Houston area the 2 days after Christmas - so what should i see/do?

A friend of mine and I will be in the Houston area on Dec 26 and 27th. We are two 24-27 year old males. We will be arriving on the 26th around 9 am. Dont have to leave until Sunday morning - so we have 2 full days to tour Houston. Plan on touring Minute Maid Park on Sat morning, as we are both baseball fans. Was considering Johnson Space Center on Friday once we arrive, but the half price ticket deal is no longer in effect and some of the reviews lead me to believe it may be aimed more at kids. Sat, after the ballpark tour we planned on staying out on Galveston island and seeing what island looks like post Ike. Would have time after the ballpark tour though, to see other stuff while we are in downtown Houston.

So my question to the locals is - with someone like me, with all this time, where should i go as MUST see locals?

Thanks,

G Rizzle

You seem to have a full weekend. See a museum in the museum district if you have time.

Discovery Green Park should still have their ice rink out. It is just a short walk from Minute Maid. then walk to Main and take the train to the Museum district and visit Fine Arts Museum or the Natural History. You can walk over to the village. Just on the other side of Rice Stadium and have lunch or coffee and shop. I suggest Ruggles Bistro for Lunch. It is great!

NASA is on the way to Galveston off NASA rd 1. skip the hands on museum and take the actual tour.

We always suggest museums to tourists -- so what are options we can give people who really just aren't into museums or have great museums where they come from and prefer to see other sights?

I would avoid the Space Center on a holiday weekend. Houston has few places to take visitors so everyone is going to be there and your probably looking at 4 hours in a line to take a tour.

If you're downtown near Minute Maid, you may as well go to the new Cathedral. It just opened this year and it is quite amazing!

Be sure to check out the Houston Museum of Natural Science's Bodyworlds 2 exhibit - interesting stuff, check the website Body Worlds 2

This museum also has IMAX films as well, but Bodyworlds 2 is a temporary exhibit (until February '09) that is a must see. You can buy tickets for the exhibits & IMAX online or you can buy at the door, but keep in mind that on a holiday weekend sellouts are common.
