AIG (American International Group)
Has anyone heard of this company for auto insurance in Houston? I have a pretty reasonable quote from them. I know the US is bailing them out for some $85 billion and will retain a 79.9% stake in the company....so would this make it a good bet to take on auto insurance and not worry that it will be in anymore trouble. Anyone have insurance from them? Any negatives or positives to share?

Their insurance is funded separately and has its own capital so even if they went under the insurance would still be good.

We used to have AIG insurance when I lived in Ohio. Yes it was cheap but there is a reason. We got in an accident (not our fault). We were driving in a parking lot and had the right away on the thru street and another car t-boned us when she blew a stop sign at the end of an aisle. AIG dropped us when we made the claim. Accident wasn't our fault, clean driving record and they dropped us. Wouldn't recommend them.

They suck. They will qualify you on the phone by asking more questions then is any of their damn business. After 15 minutes of questions comes the where do you work question. When you answer by saying you work for yourself, you are self employed then they tell you they are sorry but do not insure self employed people.
And I thought the days of profiling and discrimination was a thing of the past. I was wrong.

You should have lied from the start. Self employed people always seem to get screwed when it comes to insurance. Even if they were to insure you, your premiums would be through the roof!

If you work for a car dealer are there insurance companies that offer cheaper incentives through them or the state?

I always lie to get what I need from big brother and the establishment. In this case my main fighting words to them were why dont you tell people up front that you do not insure self employed? Why do you make people go through the whole questions/prequalification process and ask job question last?
No one ever said big business had any brains. They could care less about us peons.

Insurance companies are profit seeking companies that are all based on actuarial cost/benefit analysis and statistics. If they're statistics say that insuring self employed people isn't profitable, then they have no motivation to do so no matter what somebody's individual status would be.
