I'm 23 years old and will be moving to Houston from DC. The problem is I don't know anyone in the city and am moving for a better quality of life. Will I have a hard time meeting people and end up miserable, or is Houston the kind of town that's friendly to transplants? I know this question probably has been asked but I had to put it out there. I'm kinda nervous moving half way across the country by myself, but I know its something I need to do.

I have not met one smiling mexican here. everybody else seem welcoming. then again i never met a mexican ever except a few nice ladies in taco trucks
as for friends, work is a good place to start finding good friends. another way is to find your clubs (cars, quilting, gay etc)

I'm confused about why one would single out Mexicans, smiling or otherwise, especially if one doesn't know any.

To answer the question, yes, I think it's easy to meet people. I met someone while just hanging out at Borders. We struck up a casual convo, then went out to dinner. I'm sure I'd meet more people there if I went more often. Everywhere I go I meet nice people and vow to go back. And I agree that if you have a hobby you should work that angle. I knit, and in Los Angeles joining a knitting group gave me lifelong friends. Here I've been too lazy to check any out.

Then you never met my wife Then again, she may be smiling because she is a chemist as opposed to taco truck employee. I don't think I'd be too happy if I worked in a taco truck.

nah seriously. i dont understand yet or actually put some time understanding why I have not met a mexican. I've met the one off rare ones from countries I thought you'd have to escape from (cambodia, iraq, cuba, peru, ghana, nigeria etc) but for some reason i've never really met a mexican. maybe mexicans and asians dont exist in the same dimension? or maybe the polarity is the same or something to that effect

Houston is very friendly. You could try Meetup as that seems a really good way to find people with similar interests.

I have met more people here than anywhere else I have ever lived. I have lots of great friends. One things about Houston, TX is that there are a lot of friendly people here.

Houston is one of the most friendliest places. Also depends on how outgoing you are.

You have never meet a smiling Mexican? Maye it's your ****ty dispostion. You might try approaching everyone you meet with a smile. I know I would offer a smile in return, and I'm Mexican. Imagine that. So my friend, if we should ever meet and I don't smile, you might have to set the example. Hell, I might even offer you a hug.
