And feeder roads with strip clubs, porno stores, used car dealerships w/ Mexican flags, exceedingly trashy apartments, furniture warehouses, giant mall parking lots, billboards for some establishments previously listed, etc, etc. Due to these feeders and putting the almighty $ first, our highways are quite possibly the ugliest I've driven on in the entire USA. I will say it is unique, though.

Seattle
San Diego
Los Angeles
Dallas
San Antonio
El Paso

How much you will enjoy Houston depends entirely on you. Do you know any people here? Have you come to visit?
Whatever you do, don't take advice from people who are content to pay $4000/month to live in a 10'X10' box, surrender about 50% of their grossly inflated salaries (which have orders of magnitude less real purchasing power) to Federal, State, Municipal and Ipod taxes, pay $10 for a beer, $15 for a cocktail and $200 for a round of sh*tty golf and have never actually put gasoline in a car or pushed a lawnmower. Pot meet kettle. I'll never knock anyone's preference of city, township or unincorporated settlement (unprovoked, that is), but I really can not understand how anyone can live in New York. Any time I spend in that place is spent in tension, discomfort and vague, diffuse anger.
I have zero experience with Seattle, San Diego or LA beyond a few weekends spent in LA. If you like to meet a lot of young, pretty girls in a state of perpetual denial about their actual career, LA is a great place.
Dallas is a bit more Whoosy-Whatsy and nightclubby than Houston and has what I perceive to be a real focus on pretense. Overall probably not a terrible match for a New Yorker.
San Antonio is a great town. Lots of nightlife, lots of fun, lots of access to beatiful countryside and there's that whole "Horseshoe Bay" thing going on.
If you are looking for the greatest possible impact of culture shock, El Paso is for you.
As for allegations of heat, humidity, lack of topography and general stupidity, Houston is guilty on all counts in varying degrees. I take partial exception to "dumb" - Having a red neck does not necessitate having a small brain. I doubt very much that the incidence of stupid people is any different here than anywhere else.

Are there little places where conservative families and people all gather together to celebrate their conservativeness? Yes.
But are there a lot of educated, outspoken, fun, affluent LIBERALS in Houston.. NO.
There's no real progressive generation in Houston. It's not there.
You've got partying heathens...
But not a whole big group of progressive, liberal types..
You can't go into a restaurant and discuss green living, Deism, Democratic Party (positively), and anti-establishment sort of things.. without feelings like you've got the many hands of Young and Osteen and Bush judging you
Houston is GREAT for a pretentious, cut loose on the weekends in the Saab convertible, conservative
And great for soccer moms.
Do Seattle, Portland, or San Diego if you have any thread of liberal in you.

You obviously have not been to Montrose or the Heights, where speaking unfavorably about the Democratic party can get your food spit in and items thrown at you from across the room. Your entire thread basically is false and based on ignorance. San Diego a liberal bastion? Oh, sweetie.... bless your heart.

people dont make roads over the good hills, only the flatter ones, or they carve on the side of it. either way, in these places there are other hills (or the same one) around you, not just under your car

On a clear night, that ramp off the beltway going onto the Gulf Freeway is way up high and will give quite a view.
