My son (23) just got a job with a well known sportswear company. Starting pay of $40,000 and they paid off his student loan to ITT! He, his wife and 2 kids are doing fine on that plus her part time work at Walmart. Plus his dad (me!) got a nice warm jacket from Santa from there! lol
Of course the cost of living may be different between Texas and western Kentucky, but they are getting along pretty good.

some people have trouble making it on a 90K income!
You asked a tricky question.
Here is my opinion:
41K in Houston is fair. and you even can be conservative by using public transportation (if your job pays or funds your communite).
You will have to locate housing nearby a Bus stop or Park & Ride.

food clothes, get sunday's chronicle(paper) and save coupons.

A few years ago, I was making about 42K and was living fine.
I leaved by the Addicks park and ride. Commuting from I-10 & HWY-6 to downtown 5 days a week...my employer paid the bus pass.(Q-Card).

Rented 1-bed apt ~700 sqft, about $650 + utilities, which ran me $800(max) per month.

Good luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance!
