Amused, your lesson helps explain the disparity in price between Nottingham and Thornwood.

No it's called the real world. Everything isn't equal in the city, it all has to do with location. Why is a campy explaination of what constitutes a strip of land/section of Houston snobbery? The closer you get to Katy, the cheaper the house. It's simple locationomics. Once you get out of SBISD along that side of the Freeway, everything is MUCH less.

I happily live in the Memorial Ghetto, as well as my siblings. It's been called the ghetto as a self deprecating joke for decades. Also, it's called "Out There" by most east of Voss, my parents included. They have to "pack a lunch for the ride" to come visit from Tanglewood. But in reality it isn't Memorial at all, it's a section of west Houston along Memorial that happens to be in the same school district as The Villages.

I think all the schools are fine in SBISD at grade school level. And frankly GreatSchools has to be taken with a grain of salt, since everything is based on TAKS. I think probably the only Elem. that doesn't have apartments to it is Memorial Elem, which has less than 450 students. But really, what's wrong with kids that live in *gasp* apartments? Most Americans can't afford a house. To me that's an exurban phobia.

I like that junky commercial area west of Kirkwood. It's always been fast food row. You've also got the Baskin-Robbins that's been there forever, Kroger and Randall's, Blockbuster, Ace Hardware, Memorial Athletic Club, Chuck E Cheese, loads of restaurants, etc. It's convenient having all these things close by.

I love that Baskin-Robbins. That's where my sister lost her first ice cream cone to a slow death on the sidewalk. The guy that worked there saw what happened and brought her another cone! I think she was 5 or 6... I can't remember. The McDonald's across the street is where some punk teenager threw away my left-behind stuffed kitty cat and my mom and I had to go digging through the trash to get it. Boy did I cling to my stuffies after that!!

We shopped at Handy Andy...I think it was either where the Kroger now is or where the Randall's is. Back then we lived in the Boonies...Fleetwood! I mean BOONIES...we weren't allowed to play near where the new houses were being built because of the scorpions.

Back when I was a kid, Dairy Ashford was shaped like an S. Very woodsy. There was no Eldridge.

LOL!!

Unfortunately, "locationomics" need to be explained because Houston is largely unzoned and unplanned. In other cities these boundaries are obvious. Not so here.

And Kirkwood didn't go through past Memorial until the early 90's.

Is there a general rule about the South side of Memorial being more desirable than the North? That would explain the price difference between Westchester and Thornwood...

Yes, in general it's considered more desirable because it's buffered by the bayou. It has easy access to the park and the bayou really does seem to block a lot of the city noise.

However, the bayou was a lot more fun for kids when it was wild and un-groomed. The park-like atmosphere has invited the public, and the public scares parents in general.

Gone are the days of teen bonfires and booze in the woods. The stables too. <sigh>

Are there mostly stay at home moms in Thornwood or is it made up mainly of dual income households? HOw about Memorial Athletic Club, is anyone a member? I'd love the scoop. Also, someone mentioned a mom's group in Thornwood, can you tell me what it consists of in general? Thanks in advance!
