Galena Park
I found a nice looking house in Galena Park for around $85k. I don't know anything about the area. Can someone fill me in? Pros and cons? Thanks.

Not a great neighborhood but it all depends what you are looking for. Give an idea of what you are looking for, how much you want to spend, and where you want to commute to and we can help out a little better.

Thanks for the input, I'll check those areas. I'm afraid that 100k is out of my budget range. I have another post here called appliance business in Houston. Currently, I am semi-retired with an income of $1700 a month. I want to start an appliance repair business to supplement my income. Once my wife gets her green card and can work, and the biz brings in profit, we'll qualify for a higher mortgage. I used a mortgage calculator to see what I could qualify for and an 85k house is stretching it a little.

Well, Sterling Green is an area you could consider. There are some fairly nice foreclosures and small homes in Deer Park and Pasadena in your price range (and overall better neighborhoods). Go to HAR.com and check out the listings there. For example, I found this: 2606 Indian Tr, Deer Park, TX 77536

Wow. I feel you. My husband just got his green card too. Did you guys do the waiver ?? Anyway.. Are you guys hispanic? If so then you might be allright with Pasadena/Deer Park area.. some people aren't.. Let me know more about you and what you are looking for and I'll see what places I know of..
Also check out the subdivision called Yaupon Ranch it's in NW Houston Between Logenbough & FM 529.. I saw tons of houses there between 80-100k and it seems allright for that price range. Not awesome but it's surrounded by very nice areas so it should be pretty safe..
