This is our first year in the states (we have been here 6 months now) and I require some newbie information .

Can anyone tell me roughly when our property tax bill will be issued? We are in Pearland (Brazoria County) and moved into a new property on October 31st.

Also when do you do/return your tax return - will we receive something in the post from the IRS? I have noticed lots of commercials for tax advisors on TV so am assuming it will be soon?

I think these are the last things we have not done before - so next year we should be old hands at this.

TIA

I'm in Harris County and got my property tax bill around the 8th of Nov. They were due by Jan 31...with late fees assessed each month afterward...
Federal taxes...due by April 15th and yes, you will begin to get all of your tax info in by mail. As of yet, nothing has come in for us...but I expect any time now.

Do your have an escrow account with your mortgage company? If so they will pay your property tax and its usually paid in Dec/Jan. You will be issued a W-2 or 1099 form by your employer by Jan 31st then you have until April 15th to file for your federal taxes.

Thanks guys, I called the county assessors office and was told that we will not get a property tax bill until next year as it is a new home and was not completed until the end of October. Any dues for this year will simply be added on.

I guess we just wait for the tax return information and then get it back to the IRS. As part of his relocation package hubby gets some sort of assistance in completing and returning this - will have to make enquiries.

Do you know if I will have to complete a return or can we complete one joint return (I am not working) so seems a bit pointless me doing one.

You will file jointly and your husband gets a deduction for you as a dependent since your not working.
