you can't get a security clearance if you don't have an employer who has contract that needs you from what I understand
security clearances usually are awarded for project work and if you leave the project or it terminates your clearance is suspended
it is just easier to re-open/re-establish a security clearance within a closer time frame than to start from the ground up

You will need at least an active background investigation. Top Secret lasts five years. I had a TS for a particular military job. When I got transferred I no longer needed it and it got downgraded to Secret. My TS background investigation (originally took two years to come back good, that was average) was and still is good until Aug of this year. Even though I retired from the military last summer. An employer could easily reactivate my TS in a short amount of time.

You need a security clearance for an overseas job but whatever this job is will not give you the clearance you need. Ummm...sounds illegal to me. Wouldn't you want a work visa? Not a security clearance?

Lots of govt. contractors want to hire folks with current clearances. It is not illegal just smart for the company. It took two years for my TS investigation to come back. What would a company do with an employee for two years that could not do the job?

If you don't have military, government employee, or defense industry experiance yourdon't qualify.

I have government clearance, and I can tell you it's not something you just go out and "get". You might want to talk to your employer, if they are requiring it, and do not have the means of getting it then you may want to back away from them because you could be getting yourself caught in a mess. I also would recomend you call the issuing body for information rather than asking for it on CD forums. It can draw unwanted attention with all of the issues from the past.
