Healthcare is recession proof ?? Methodist Hospital hired only ONE out of 2000 applicants (Houston: find a job, live)

Methodist (who again became one among the best 10 places to work for - because of 3% pay rise and $250 Kroger card given to employees who worked long hours after IKE) hired only 1 out of 2000 applicants in last year. Also, there was an ‘voluntary turnover’ of 11 % (ie, 1200) jobs . Definition of ‘voluntary turnover’ is anybody’s guess.

I would still place my bets with healthcare. I believe that "new jobs" is a new job created, not necessarily one that would be filled because someone left.

Voluntary turnover is very common in healthcare- it means you resign your job.

I have worked in healthcare for 25 years, many of them in Houston, and have never been concerned about job loss. It helps that I'm an RN, but I think that almost any job that has at least something to do with patient care is pretty stable here. I do know of some who have had overtime cut out, but I have not heard of anyone who works in healthcare that can't find a job.

Well compare that to O&G, we have had 60% of our people laid off in the last 3 months.

direct patient care should be pretty stable.

My co-worker was saying that his girlfriend (not in methodist) was being asked to reduce her hours from 40 to 32 due to the reduction in the number of patients in the unit.

There is no such field that is recession proof; however, there are some that are recession resistant. If no one buys product X, and more money goes out than comes in, what do you do? The only thing that comes close would be the job of being a chronic welfare recipient, the type who is otherwise healthy and fit to work, but would rather live on welfare.

Normally, I agree with you, wyiwyg. But I read that a lot of garbage collectors were let go when those mechanical collectors went into use. And I recently read that plans are to make garbage collection even more automated. (I dont know how that can be done)
