I've seen photos of Montrose...and I LIKE it! Looks very cool...is Montrose unique? If so, how so compared to other areas?

How much is rent or the cost of housing in the Montrose area of Houston...?

Anything else that defines or makes it unique or sets it apart?

Montrose is unique and quite walkable for Houston. Many different types of stores, pubs, cafes and restaraunts mixed in with tatoo parlors, resale shops and gay bars. You can rent anything from a garage apartment to a new three story townhome. You can find duplexes for rent or a $600000 dollar 1930's home on the same street.
Eclectic at it's best!

Montrose is a blast (Numbers is one of the greatest Rock and Roll clubs outside of LA or NY) and I came real close to closing on a house there 15 years ago. However, what I thought was a quiet family neighborhood for my young girls near but not in the restaurant/club area proper turned out to be a parking lot for said establishments a few blocks away with lots of pass through and searching for spaces at night, esp weekends. I was lucky that I had put down an offer on a Friday night and hung around to witness the transformation of the neighborhood after dark. I used a loophole to get out of the deal and found a house in a more serene area. Just be aware of this, it's kind of cool that you're within walking distance of so much good stuff but there's baggage to go with it. Not just traffic but I also witnessed a few prostitutes (I think) hanging around too. Perhaps current residents can comment on the area today - maybe it's been yuppified up and cleansed of such (ahem) "urban excitement". I do know that there are even more restaurants, maybe a few less night clubs today. I think if I was single or a young couple without kids or gay I would consider it very desireable. If you're with young children or just a person who really values privacy and quiet I wouldn't recommend it. On the other hand, it would be a place where your children would grow up knowing the true meaning of diversity and non-judgementalness of lifestyle, blah blah blah! :-)

It's pretty much as "hip" as you get in Houston. It may have been cooler (and less "yuppified") back in the day, but it definitely has a unique flavor--more urban, funk chic with a Houstonian twist. It's also better than Alief.

Montrose was UNREAL back in the 1980s...real, real unabashed street life at night. The Houston Police put an end to that free-spirited way back in 1988.

I've been a teen who cruised there and been to concerts and whatnot back in the day.

Today, it's not like that anymore but the Montrose has grown with me. Now my wife and I enjoy going to Brasil, Agora Ka, Katz's and such. Tomo's Sushi is very good.

It still feels somewhat edgy, is still colorful (if a bit gentrified) and quite entertaining but not too Fodor's or "postcard" (superficial) as Melrose in L.A. For me, that's perfect.
