Hello everyone, we want to take our new born baby boy to a portrait studio to take photos for his one-month birthday next week. Do you have any recommendation as to where to go? Do you like Walmart, Sears, JC Penny, Kiddie Kandid, or anywhere else? I want to find a place with good quality and reasonable pricing.

Thank you.

I beg you, don't use one of those chain studios. As a professional photographer, it pains me to see the stuff they put out. There are TONS of portrait photogs in Katy specializing in babies and children, some of them pretty reasonably priced. Most will come to you, some will use natural light but some will bring portable backdrops and studio lights. They take much more time with your child and MUCH more time in the post-processing.

We did that, sbhubbell, with an up and coming photographer, with a hefty discount because she was trying to build her portfolio. I have to say, we love the pics, but it was still pricey and if we hadn't had help from our parents, we wouldn't have been able to get what we did. Not everyone can afford a private photog, even with a deep discount.

What Penney's does isn't bad, I like Picture People the best, though, for any chain. If you're on a budget, I'd go see them. Memorial City has one, I don't know about Katy.

Mom2Feebs, may I know what is the approx. cost to invite a photographer to one's home to take private session? I know it won't be cheap but I have no idea how pricey it would be...

Thank you.

Onyx, it can be anywhere from $50-$300 for the sitting fee depending on their level of experience. I charge $75 now. For some people that includes a CD of the images, for some it does not. Prints are generally either priced ala cart or as a package, with most packages starting around $125. Your best bet is to find someone in the portfolio building stage, as Mom2Feebs mentioned, and for that you should probably just ask around within some local mommy groups, such as Moxie Moms of Katy or Mom's Club.

These are friends of mine and are doing quite a good business in photography. My wife's sister used them for her wedding, but she does a ton of children photos.
