I would also suggest a rescue. Visit your local humane shelter, you will see loads of puppies waiting for a forever home.
There is nothing wrong with purchasing a puppy. And $800 is a mid-range for a PUREBRED...excluding breeding rights. This of course, depends on the breed and the popularity of it at any given time.
Should you go PB, do your homework and make sure it is a reputable breeder, ie health guarantee, contract, and ask lots of questions. If you visit the pet forum, there are a standard set of questions to ask that help weed out the good breeders from the backyard breeders, and you will find that list there. Need help in finding it, DM me. Good luck in your search for your new furkid!

I know this has been mentioned but call the area breed rescue group. Many times members of the group are fostering animals until they can find them a good home. Also, you can sign up on a list at the SPCA so when a specific breed that you are interested in comes into the shelter, they will call you.

Be very careful with ads you find in the Chronicle etc. Because of over breeding and poor breeding conditions, many puppy mills and backyard breeders are producing animals with a lot of problems. It may cost you a lot more on the back end to "fix" the animal. ex. hip problems, eye problems, random infections etc. If a breeder will not let you visit their facility/home etc. that should be a HUGE red flag. Also...just because an someone says their animal is AKC registered, that really does not mean that it is the case. It is really easy to get hold of those papers.

If you want to go through a reputable breeder, again...call the local breed rescue group. These people are defenders of the breed and will be able to give you the name of a good breeder.

Yes, do a rescue. We did and couldn't be happier. Our little Rat Terrier is turning out to be one superior little dog; he's as smart as they come and the friendliest little guy you could ever meet.

Some of the stories from rescue places like homewardbound break your heart.

Every ad I responded to on Chron.com and Craigslist ends up "being in Africa" or some ridiculous scam, so I have given up using those sites. Anyone have any idea where we could look for a puppy? Or know of any reasonably priced sellers?

Thanks

Seriously.

I'd go to whatever club is for people who love that breed of dog and ask their advice about where to find the dog of your dreams. That's what I did and I ended up with the two best dogs a girl could ever hope to have. I had them for much of my young adulthood before they went to doggie heaven.
