Default Best way to learn Houston-area's 'names'?

I may be moving to inside the loop at some point in the next year or so. What's the best way to learn all the area's names, and where they're located? Apparently saying, "Inside 610, sandwiched between 59 and I-10", includes MANY named areas.

Good question. I find myself going into Houston more often these days and feel like it is impossible to learn but I have a good friend on here who I can ask. Thanks jfe81

As for GPS, it has no idea which are one way streets so they ain't much help. I guess it just takes lots of practice and always looking at a map to identify your location. Another confusing thing is the highways here are more commonly known by a name rather then a number. Eastex Freeway and Gulf Freeway rather then 59 or 45 or.... It is confusing.

I know from Sugarland (vaguely) to Conroe pretty well, and as far out west as Simonton and Hempsted, but inside the Beltway and my head starts to hurt! Hahah, and I've been in Houston for 12 years, but always in the suburbs.

There are sort of two ways of looking at it, there is the "general area" names and then the specific names of different neighborhoods that would most likely be how they would be listed on HAR.com. So it depends on how much detail in that you need.

If you are looking on HAR, forget the neighborhood names and search by zip code. Otherwise you could miss a lot. For example, the part of town most people consider "Montrose" is actually made up of a lot of different neighborhoods, Westmoreland, Avondale, Mandell Place, Winlow Place, Cherryhurst, Rossmoyne, Castle Court, Courtlandt Place, and of course Montrose itself.

If someone from outside the area asked an inner-looper where they live, they would probably get an answer that fell into one of these very general categories:

Generally west, south of the bayou north of 59 you have Midtown, Montrose, River Oaks, upper Kirby, Afton Oaks, Greenway Plaza.

South of 59, generally speaking, Museum District - Southampton, Rice Village, West U, Bellaire, Braeswood, Medical Center.

Northwest of downtown: 6th ward, Rice Military, Heights, Woodland Heights, Lazybrook/Timbergrove, Shady Acres.

East: Riverside/3rd ward, East end, (or east end warehouse district or east downtown), Eastwood area, Idylwood, & Harrisburg.

These are broad generalizations with some potential overlap.

I have always wondered if the freeway name vs number thing screws up people new to Houston. If it does here it is....
45 S =Gulf
45 N= North
I10w =Katy
290 = Northwest
59E =Eastex
59S =Southwest
Beltway 8 = Sam houston Toll

did I forget any?

US90E = Beaumont
90A = Main
249 = Tomball
I-10E = East (or Baytown East)
TX-225 = La Porte
I think TX-146 is just "146."

Highways, not freeways:
TX-3 = Old Galveston
TX-6 takes on a lot of different names, usually separated by a dash

And let's not even get into the West Loop South, North Loop West, et al, designations! They are easy enough to figure out, but a mouthful nonetheless.

^^If you hear "West Loop South" then it's the 610 west heading southbound. The first direction would be whatever section of the loop/beltway and the second direction is which way you are heading. If it's an address, it's more than likely on a frontage road (aka "feeder") along the freeway. An address of "9000 South Loop West) would be on the South Loop feeder heading westbound.

Hope I didn't confuse anyone.
