It's "flexible"--meaning faculty is not affected, and administration must approve all future positions opening up for non-faculty.

“The leadership of the UT System and its institutions are keenly sensitive to the current economic climate, which has touched every corner of our great state and nation,” Dr. Cigarroa said. “Just as Texans are tightening their belts, so must we.”

"Institution presidents will have the ability to determine what positions are mission critical for immediate and future hiring to maintain the teaching, research, health and patient care services provided by the institution. I am not dictating to them what positions to fill – only that the hiring decisions be carefully scrutinized at the appropriate level of the institution," Dr. Cigarroa said.

Where is the nurse that said that health care would not feel the effects of the economy?

Nurses will not feel the effects of the economy, is more like it. There is still a nursing shortage in Houston. Health care will feel very little effects overall, but it's still going to pinch. No coincidence that this came on the heels of the approval of the latest "stimulus" package. *sigh*

Where did you find this news? They are currently trying to hire for several lab positions. I just spoke to the hiring manager of one of the labs this morning...no mention of a hiring freeze at M.D. Anderson

Well, my husband is a 5th year postdoctoral fellow in one of those labs, so he usually has the correct information, but the public release is here:

http://www.utsystem.edu/news/2009/UTS-HiringFreeze-02-10-09.html (broken link)

You can also do a Google search on "MD Anderson hiring freeze" and see some other info.

Yes I read that article and it mainly discusses the freeze on salaries of the UT senior executives. Your husband will be more affected then the medical technologists that work in the labs performing diagnostic testing. As I said medical technologist jobs are being sought by M.D. Anderson HR right now. Medical Technologist are "critical to the ongoing mission of the institution" and will continue to be filled.

You can also do a Google search on "MD Anderson hiring freeze" and see some other info.
I did a Google on the M.D. Anderson hiring freeze and only found information that they had implemented a very scrutinizing hiring system back in 2003 to save money. I found nothing anywhere specifically about M.D. Anderson 2009 hiring freeze until 2010.

Okay, I don't know what you're reading, but here's what I get when I enter "MD Anderson hiring freeze" on Google:MD Anderson hiring freeze - Google Search The 2nd and 3rd link go to the story, as well as the last two links.

I'm confused...do you still doubt the validity of the story I originally posted with the link I just posted?

*I also want to add, this is a *partial* hiring freeze. That does not mean labs will not be hiring personnel...

Let me google that for you (http://tinyurl.com/ctq8cl - broken link) Try this link. The first article that pops up is dated back to 2003 and discusses the hiring changes.

No I do not doubt the validity of the story but you came across as if M.D. Anderson was putting a complete hiring freeze on all jobs until 2010.

Thanks that is where my confusion came in...yes the economy is very bad but some jobs are recession proof like Medical Technologists!

That would be me. And MD Anderson has 82 jobs posted for nurses. And I still don't know a single nurse who is voluntarily out of work in the Houston Metro area.

I have been a nurse for 26 years and have NEVER worried about being laid off or not being able to find a job.
