I believe this is the Mission Bend area? Or close to it. And yes, it is close to Alief and has had some problems with crime. So it's okay. There are much better areas you could choose from. And from what I know, the schools in Mission Bend don't rank very well.

You might look at the below subdivisions:
Meadows
Meadowglen
(both of these in Stafford/Meadows Place just east of Sugar Land, would be a reasonable commute to West U)
Also Lexington Colony and nearby subdivisions in the east end of First Colony (First Colony is a great area that holds its value and is very family-friendly and attractive).

All of these I think are nicer/safer than Mission Bend, better schools, have some homes in your price range, and would be a better commute to West U via Hwy 59 than the Westpark/Hwy 6 area. Hwy 6 has horrible traffic.

AK123 pretty much covered the points. It's really not going to be too much of an upgrade from Sharpstown and its pretty far from your job.

I totally forgot Sienna Plantation. Its in/right outside of Missouri City and it is a pretty big master planned community. Not sure about the schools though, I think they might be zoned to Elkins HS. It wouldn't be too long of a commute, closer than the Katy area. However, you would have to basically rely on toll road to get into Houston.

I recently went out to Sienna for the first time and was pretty impressed. You should check it out.

I know I've been jumping all around the city, but what about the Fresno area? What is that area like? Is it safe? Good schools?

What about the commute to West U from Fresno? Is it much different than Pearland?
