Default 11 News: Houston burbs gaining a new type of resident

More of Houston's homeless moving out of the inner Loop | HOUSTON METRO | KHOU.com | News for Houston, Texas

I don't watch much TV news but it happened to be on when this came on. This one guy living somewhere on the NW side was set up pretty nice in his tent, or nice for being homeless I suppose. I'd take it over sleeping on a sidewalk in Midtown.

Anyway, so like, discuss or something.

I can recall before construction on I-10 began, there were little campsites tucked away in the woods at almost all intersections along I-10 from Fry toad up to Eldridge by the homeless. I guess these people were ahead of their time.

When they widened I-10 and began to develop the land around the intersections, these campites were wiped out. You would never know they were there, unless you happened to catch one of the homeless coming, or going. Or, as now, in the winter when the leaves are off the trees, or even smoke rising form their fires.

I also recall the oil bust in the 80s where there were tent cities built underneath I-10 and the bayou near Eldridge. These were not your average homeless, these were engineers, geologists, etc. I wonder if it will get that bad again, my industry is hurting right now and laying off in mass.

Terry Hershey Park, the clearing of the bayou, and all the foot traffic on the pathways have chased off the bums for the most part. There aren't as many places to hide anymore. And the rangers in golfcarts tend to move them along these days.
Heck, we even had homeless sleeping in the Oleander bushes along the run-off in Briargrove.
I guess they feel the middle class isn't a threat. It's the bored teens you have to watch out for.

I wonder if the single bums with get bored with the burbs and move back into the city?

Over the past few years, I've seen a handful of tweeking window washers during the day on Bay Area @ Hwy 3 and @ El Camino Real, but that's about it. I'm sure they're hiding out somewhere to sleep, as there are plenty of places around to do so. I've never seen it though.

Default Good setup...

Does anyone remember the story a few months ago about the homeless guy who was living in the crawl space of a business by the Galleria? This guy was living in one of the "pyramids" of the property, he had a bed in there, and get this, the dude stole a flatpanel TV and tapped into the electricity of the building and had a plasma television going on... in stereo!

I read an account on HAIF of this kid who lived in the abandoned Savoy hotel on Main downtown and it still had electricity. I could totally live with that. Apparently getting in and out of the place was a bit of a pain though. I went and couldn't figure out how he got in, or the owners came and sealed off wherever it was.
