1) Having enough disposable income to fly non-stop to either coast and get there in less than 5 hours. I once considered living elsewhere, but I have family and friends on both the East and West Coast. Since Houston is a Continental Airlines hub, not only you can get non-stops on Continental but other airlines as well. British Airways, Air France, U.S. Airways, and Southwest Airlines for instance have non-stop flights from Houston to selected destinations. Having a Hub here makes the airfare price market more competitive as well. Living centrally is nice. For my West Coast friends, a flight to the East Coast takes as long as it takes me to get to London! No cross-country trips for me unless is OUT of the country. Continental has last minute specials every Tuesday for flights departing that Saturday, returning Monday or Tuesday. So for the person who loves North Carolina, you may want to take advantage of this since NC and SC seem to appear quite often in the cheap fare specials.
2) Hobby Airport - I like best because it is easy to get in/get out of versus trying to get in or out of IAH-Bush Airport. I happen to live at equal distance from both airports so how quickly I can get in/out of is key. Some people don't like Southwest, but frankly I think they have the best coach seating. If anything, you can choose not to seat next to someone taking up 2 seats LOL as opposed to getting preassigned seating next to someone you'd rather not seat next to on a plane. Also, if booking correctly, one can minimize stops or be able to book non-stops for several well-known destinations. Having Southwest here has helped make airfares more competitive as opposed to those in medium size cities (can think of a few in the east coast where U.S. Air is the main option) where prices are ridiculous and they only get the smaller planes!
3) Great restaurants
4) Memorial Park
5) Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (and I'm not a Country music fan)
6) Trees/greenery
7) Theater Under The Stars, the Theater District with major theaters in central location (Wortham Center, Hobby Center, Jones Hall, Alley Theater)
8) Variety of places of worship

Friendly people, good weather outside of summer- wish I was there now, bigger houses for your buck, choice of places to eat at reasonable prices, the coast isn't far away.

Bellaire Ave/Blvd. One of the most eclectic and interesting streets in the U.S. when one drives it from west to east.

Omygoodness, do you do that on purpose? You must either have a death wish, a loaded pistol riding shotgun or extremely good insurance. If I had all three of those, I still wouldnt do it.

Alief is one of the most urban neighborhoods in the city of Houston. There are all sorts of shops and cool little places between Dairy Ashford and Beltway 8. Between Beltway 8 and 59 is little China, which is a neighborhood I absolutely love. There are tons of places to go. Then it turns into Gulfton, which has some of the best Mexican food around. Finally, it ends at Holcombe, which is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Houston (technically not Houston, but I consider all the island cities Houston).
People who ignore Alief and Sharpstown are ignoring some of the most interesting neighborhoods the city has to offer. It's just a shame that people read the paper or listen to the news, hear that something happened in SW Houston and immediately assume Alief or Sharpstown. Alief and Sharpstown are a small portion of what the media considers SW Houston.

I live in the Alief area so I know exactly where you're describing. There may be tons of places to go but I dont want to go there after dark...and you're taking a serious chance going to the Gulfton area places anytime.
I'm glad you consider those areas "interesting". News reporters consider them "interesting" too. Stay safe!

You still not liking H-town? It's oddly growing on me, but I definitley do not want to stay here forever.
