I live Uptown and I went to Austin last friday night. I took 290 and got there in 2 hours and 45 minutes. I left my apartment at like 6:30pm and arrived in Austin a little after 9pm.

10 to 71 through Bastrop to Austin is a great way to go. It only takes 2.5 hrs. from Sugar Land with this route.

The worst route is 290 through Brenham. My family tried that once and it took us 4 hours.

Another route that isn't well known but beautiful (if you aren't in a rush) is Highway 6 to Hearne (just north of Bryan/College Station) and then 79 through Taylor and Round Rock into the north side of Austin. There is a loop around Taylor that you can take the wrong one so be sure to read the signs.

There are several routes - you can take Highway 105 West out of Conroe or Highway 30 West out of Huntsville and it will take you all the way to Highway 6. Then take Highway 6 north to 79.

That is some of the prettiest countryside around. Guess it shows that I'm a scenic driver.

Xodox - beware that the Highway 6 the prior post is talking about is NOT AT ALL the Hwy 6 that is in far west Houston. The 2 Hwy 6s are not connected to each other. In order to make it to that particular Hwy 6, you'd have to take U.S. 290 and exit that particular Hwy 6 to Bryan/College Station. In a good day, that drive alone takes 1 1/2 hours. Do not be misled. All due respect to the well-intentioned post, but it can be misleading to anyone not familiar enough with Texas highways.

Which is why I specifically gave directions on how to get to THAT Highway 6 via Conroe and Huntsville. Also said not to be in a hurry. Wasn't misleading, just giving people ideas on where to go on a country drive.
