another relocation question (Houston: rentals, condos, townhomes)

My husband and I are moving to Houston lat summer and are looking for a house.
He'll be working in Greenspoint while I'll be working about 8 miles south of Hobby. We don't want to spend our ENTIRE lives commuting, so we're looking to split the difference. here's what we're looking for:

1. an established neighborhood -- we do not want new construction or a planned community;
2. we prefer older homes
3. we'd like a walking neighborhood, if possible
4. we have dogs
5. we do NOT have children to be concerned about
6. we like cultural events
7. we'll spend up to around $250K

Can anyone give me any advice?

there are a lot of oprions. Condos, townhomes, houses, and rentals available.
Houston has grown a lot in the last four years. I woul get in touch with a realtor and work out a solution. It's not going to easy to find something to accomodate both of you, since you are 8 miles south of Hoby and you Husband is about 5 miles north of downtown. Opposite directions.
