Yeah, for those who can truly afford it, as loans are harder to get nowadays.
The rest are forced to live with the new cultural diversity, or move farther out where things are still more affordable than desirable spots in town.

I think with the traffic you can only "push" people so far out before they cry uncle.

Yeah, if you've $500k+ to spend on a house that can fit a large family and is zoned to good schools.
For us poor folks who had a budget limit in the $300k range, we're kind of SOL.

There's plenty in the 300 range and lower zoned to good schools. Ya'll haven't looked very close. Ever look at 77077? Or Briarmeadow? Barkers Landing? Thornwood? Fleetwood? Sometimes Meyerland?
Off course it's not 90% white in the schools....And you aren't going to get a shiny 4,000 sf penny of a house.
But you know this one isn't bad....there are more out there

Or a fixer-upper in a great location, close to the bayou, for 159,000

Westbriar Middle and Westside HS are great schools.

The area in the OP probably doesn't have people looking for homes in that price point (300k).

We had friends who lived in Briarmeadow and didn't like it. Their home got robbed and there was criminal activity in the home across the street from them. Other than that the subdivision was fine but they did not like the surrounding area. But I suppose technically it would fit.
Looked at all of those. 77077 at the time was having some boundary changes around a new elementary school that was built. Couldn't get it all figured out in time. The 77079 zoned to Katy, we thought the middle school and high school were too far away. Thornwood was probably the one we came closest to buying in. Just couldn't find the right house - it is really not a big subdivision and there wasn't much inventory. Meyerland - couldn't find anything in our price range zoned to the better schools to accommodate our larger than average family.
Maybe others will have better luck... but I still don't think there are enough options in this price range in the city (rather than outlying suburbs).

BTW, There are two more subsidized apartment complexes going in across Ella Blvd from Westfield HS. (will these be zoned to DeKaney?)

Yes, I noticed those newly built apartments. They barely finished building out that new subdivision, I think it's called Ella Crossing, and here they go and build some apartments right next to them. They also built these ugly box apartments right off I45 (east side) between 1960 and Richey. I think Houston has enough apartments but apparently these builders don't agree with them. I remember seeing a report that said a million or two people will be moving to the Houston area.
Everytime I see an area being cleared, I always fear they will build some apartments. That area over there off Rankin between Ella and Cambury Square will be some kind of military building and not more apartments....thank GOD.

Not really, the white flight folks just keep leaving their areas when it becomes more diverse & shift North. Just get the school demographics from the past 20 years of all Houston burbs & you'll see it.
