Hi, all. I actually live in Austin and post over there, but I have a question that I'm hoping you Houston folks could answer for me.

This past week, we were in Houston visiting family. As we were driving home on Sunday, we noticed that the HOV lanes on I-10 are closed on weekends. Um, why? The construction's done.

I guess they are not needed on weekends unless there is a wreck so they close them

But why? That's like just closing an exit or two on weekends 'cause their aren't as many people who would use them.

Default Note sure, but...

During the week the lanes are 'staffed'. The people who staff the booths are there to assist any motorist that may have problems, usually a tow truck driver is also there. I'm not sure what else they do, though I always see constables parked there as well, hoping to make revenue.

So, the booths are not staffed on the weekend, so they are closed. I've seen some people use the HOV lanes anyway because they are not restricted, but don't try it, I've also seen people get tickets for using them on the weekends.

Very very few use the lane even when it is open. Get stuck behind one slow poke in that thing and you wish you were in the main lanes where every one is going faster anyway.

Precisely why they're closed on the weekends. They're not needed because the construction is done. Are 5 mainlanes not enough? LOL!

I hope you aren't like the muppets I see every day in the HOV tailgaiting me as I drive at 60-65mph. I'm not going to break the law just because people like that want to behave in a criminal manner.

Amusingly some brain dead cellphone using soccer mom did exactly what I described last month. She was so close that I thought she was trying to park in the trunk of my car. As soon as the HOV widened to 2 lanes I signalled and moved over, of course this wasn't quick enough for the daft porcine creature piloting the loser-mobile and she dived across the double white line, went past and sped up as fast as her outsize POS could manage. Schadenfreude couldn't have been stronger when I passed her pulled over to the side of the road 2 miles later with a Deputy walking over to ticket her, presumably for being a moron-royale or speeding. Either works for me.

60-65 mph in the I-10 HOV lane with no one blocking you in front is unsafe and rather selfish if you ask me...

It might be unsafe, but between beltway and highway 6 there is usually one or two constables collecting revenue. I will stick to 65.

Since I been driving down that-a-way lately I been noticing quite a few cars have only one person in their car. So all this talk about pigs watching stopping and extorting money from them is hard for me to believe. I just dont see it.

I never been in that government boondogle bureaucratic disaster special privileged lane that all of us paid for but only a few....a very very few can use.

I would not use that lane even if I had 2 people since 95% of the time the main lanes are moving faster anyway. Get stuck behind one creeping granny and you are doomed.
