It failed. Miserably. The once great schools are now terrible (case in point: Westfield High), the low-income kids are no better off than before, and middle class families looking for good schools have sprawled out further to places like the Woodlands and Cypress.
So a few poor kids came in and ruined the whole school district. Must not have been very solid to start with.

You know what? This is America! Everyone has a BETTER OPPORTUNITY! I have a daughter with autism who can't even tell me her name--and God knows I love her more than anything--but I would give my life to take the autism away and just allow her the same opportunities as someone neurologically typical in ANY neighborhood! These low-income kids who are being given an education--an EDUCATION! Free and appropriate! If they can't find a way to excel in their school, and move on to a better life, what makes you think they could excel in any other school or find a way to make a difference?

I want to see statistics on how many kids do better vs. fail when they are moved to "better" school districts. Then I'd like to know what impact their residency has on the rest of the neighborhood as far as property values and crime. In Ft. Myers, FL about 3 or 4 years ago, the Utopians running the show started school choice and it has been an unmitigated disaster.

The sense of entitlement in America scares the living crap out of me. I just can't get over it. What happened to earning anything? When did it become give? Good lord, my father was born in 1923, the second oldest of four, and when his mother died in 1930, his two younger brothers were given up for adoption. His dad could not work and take care of the little ones. That's just what you had to do to survive. They all grew up, went to college, went to war, one did not make it back, but as poor as they all were, they all managed to get degrees and better their lives, because it was EXPECTED! Not because they expected it to be given to them.

My opinion, everyone has a choice to live anywhere they desire. It's their choice. When people choose to and can afford to live in Sugarland, they do so for many various reasons. One being that their hard work over the years allowed them to purchase a life style (schools, nice neighborhoods, people of the same demograhic background, etc) in Sugarland because that's the lifestyle they want. But the problem is when they settle down in an certain area thinking that's what they get and then someone comes in an try to push in a different lifestyle, is that really fair? I don't see no problem at all that the people of Sugarland might get mad if this happens. Imagine what would happen if the developers tried this in River Oaks. Don't ya'll think the residents there would be up and arms as well?

My question is: how will low income people afford to pay for property taxes in Fort Bend? If you want to live in a nice city, send your kids to good schools...you will have to pay up.

I agree with most here...going to a good school doesn't mean you're going to succeed. You are who you make of yourself. Nothing was given...in fact, never have I thought I was entitle to this or that. I just know I need to try my best in school and getting an education is the ticket to open doors. My parents came to the US with $5 dollars and just the clothes on their backs, so hard work and sacrifice compass our daily lives.

This is a rental development , no property tax for the residents.

A 3 bedroom unit in this development is $750 a month. That is equivalent to the payments on a $150,000 mortgage at todays rate of 4.5%. That is higher than the $90,000 I paid for my Park Pointe house across the street. Am I not worthy to live in Sugar Land and have my kids attend Kempner High School??

You're manipulating the numbers for your benefit. $750/month would not get you a $150,000 house. That will will only pay for the mortgage and not taxes. You need close to $1400-$1500/month for a $150,000 house.

I'm confused. You say you have a house in Park Pointe, but ask if you are not worthy to live in Sugar Land?

So do you, or do you not live in Sugar Land?

My wife and I grew up in a high crime neighborhood, what you folks call the GHETTO(East San Diego). I attended our local schools(Central El., Wilson Jh., and Crawford Hs.) while my wife was bused out (through a magnet program) to schools in good areas like Mission Bay Hs, in both cases we made out just fine.
Wife: ASB president, Homecoming queen, SDSU Grad, ect...
Myself: USC grad and a great husband

One thing we notice since we moved out here is how much emphasis you guys put on Schools. I think it's foolish to think that's because you have more black and Mexicans at a school means your kids will not get a good education, I would even respect you more if you've just come out and say "I don't want my kids in school with poor minorities".

Motivated kids with good parents will succeed at ANY SCHOOL PERIOD!
