looking for best apartment for young, single female
I am a 23 year old elementary school teacher and will be moving to Houston this summer. I have been searching through forums and apartment ratings websites and still am having trouble narrowing down apartments. A little about myself- I like to party, but just on the weekends. Weeknights need to be somewhat quiet as teaching on little sleep is not fun. I am moving from a nice area in California, so am used to being able to walk out of my door and go running through the neighborhood, which is something I would like to be able to do after I move. I am looking to move into a one bedroom apartment that is preferably less than $1000/mo. My first priority is safety, but I also am hoping to live somewhere with good parking and a washer/dryer in unit.
I have a friend living in Cheval near the intersection of 610 and i10, and would like to live close to him if possible. I would live there, but the one bedroom is $1200, a little higher than i'd like. I originally was thinking midtown, but am now thinking it might be too loud on weekdays. So now I am thinking west end might be best for me. Somewhere close to memorial park, maybe.
I spend my college years moving from apt to apt, none of which were very nice. I am hoping to find a nice apartment that I can settle down and live in for several years.
Any advice on what areas you think I would enjoy the most? Any specific apartment complexes that I should look into? or that I should avoid? Any advice is appreciated!!

You're an elementary school teacher and you like to party? That's like a nun who likes to go to bars.
Anyways, you can get a nice apartment for $1000 in Houston, unless you would like your apartment to be just one block from where the party is.
By the way, if your first priority is safety, you should stay away from parties in certain Houston area. Chance of something happen to you at a low price apartment complex is slimmer than at some party.

Teachers are people with personal lives, too. I had a friend who was a kindergarten teacher by day and a locally famous club DJ by night.

Yes, teachers do have personal lives too...thanks Houstoner.
Visitor, I am not looking to be too close to the party. A 10 minute cab ride would be fine. I am looking for suggestions of complexes that I can look into. I may now be looking into a 2 bedroom $1300-$1700 would be my range, as well as the 1 bedroom less than $1000.

Yeah right. I've known a number of young, cigarette-smoking teachers who all had the hook-up on green and a wide assortment of pills. Don't fool yourself.

Check out The Belmont in the West U area, it pretty much hits everything you're looking for, but it will probably be right at $1000/month.

Move as close intown as you can afford and still have some $$ to party on weekends.
When I came to Houston I made a mistake of moving to the suburbs because it was really cheap. I spent 45 mins in traffic every day and had no place to go out, so drove into town to go out 3-4 times a week. Don't do that. Now I live in Spring Branch, and it's good enough for me (close enough to anywhere I want to go). It may be too far for some, but it beats living somewhere off 290 outside Beltway.
BTW, where are you going to work? Make sure that you live close enough that you don't have to sit in traffic too much. Remeber, you go out maybe two or three timese a week, but you will be driving to work everyday. I would avoid living around 59/ 610 near galeria. In my opinion the traffic there is the worse in Houston and no matter when you drive it's horrible.

I am hoping to work in Spring Branch, but haven't secured a job yet. I will most likely be working within 20-30 minutes of downtown Houston. I am hoping to live in the loop and reverse commute out to wherever I get a job so that traffic won't be too much of an issue. Definitely won't be living in the suburbs...

They just built some new apartments near I-10 and 610.
I can't think of the name, but it's across the freeway from the Ikea.
I pass by it every morning.
The Marquee center is right there for your partying needs and it's very close to Spring Branch.
Might be worth checking out.

Those were the apartments I was talking about. They look nice on the outside. I would definately consider them if I was looking for an apartment.
But, I agree, at 23 you probably want to be closer to the "action". You just have to consider how much you want to spend. I am doing the reverse commute now as I work of I-10 and HWY6 and it's great - 10 mins to work
