Default womens groups???

Does anyone know of some good women's groups? I have only been in Houston a year and would like to meet some female friends. I live in Katy and most groups out here tend to be for moms or a little too religious for me. I dont mind either of those things but I dont have kids yet and I am not religious I am willing to drive into town but I am hoping to meet like minded women. Im in my mid thirties, educated, active, work full time. I wouldnt mind if it is church affiliated but preferably not a bible study. I have tried meetup and been searching but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

How did meetup work out for you?

Some might consider this thread as somewhat sexist.

I guess I see your point, I did not mean it that way at all Im finding it difficult to find women in their late twenties to mid thirties who get together to do fun things and I dont mean simply bar hop! While I eventually want children of my own, Im not there yet and I know from having many friends out of state that have kids, being a mom is a huge bonding experience with other women and obviously I would feel a little out of place. I havent found a meetup group but I am looking at several running groups. Just thought maybe one of you great posters know of a great group!

What about people from work? Hang out with them?

I don't know how people make friends at church, as most people just go to the service and then go home. Unless you get actively involved with the church, but otherwise, it's very hard to meet friends that way.

I have met some nice ladies at work but once again most are married with kids! In a city of 5 million, there has got to be other ladies new to Houston somewhere.....

Have you considered doing some volunteer work for an organization that is of intererst to you? I am sure many non-profits would love a smart, eager person that perhaps has a flexible schedule. (don't know you situation so don't want to persume). Also...many non-profits...ex. Museum of Natural Science have mixers for young professionals. I believe the American Cancer Society has a group for those under 40 as well. Many other organizations have "guilds" such as the American Heart Association that puts on various events...Heart Ball, Go Red For Women etc. You may want to look into something like that.

Of course one of the first "womens group" that I thought of is the Junior League of Houston. You will meet tons of women your age and you pick various chairty projects to work on...something that is of interest to you.

It is always a challange to meet people in a new place. Best of luck.

I did a search online and found these two choices (they are mixed groups, but chances are there are more women than men anyway and you're bound to find other women to get to know as well).
Young Professionals Club

Drawing from personal experience....I took dance lessons at SSQQ www.ssqq.com and met people this way (women as well as men). The salsa crowd at SSQQ has a good number of 20's-30's folks. Houston Swing Dance Society www.hsds.org is mostly younger folks from college age to 30's. They meet on Sundays at Melody Club ballroom (www.melodyclub.net). Think of what interests you and join a group of that particular interest.
