Can a homeowner just buy a slab of granite? I was under the impression that only a fabricator would sell as an installed price?

I would like to buy the material and find an installer independently.

I would suggest going to a few fabricator/installers and select one you like. Then, they will refer you to a granite yard to select material. You can even select the exact slabs you want. The granite countertop material industry is structured to not sell to home owners direct. I'm sure you could find a hole in the wall wholesaler to sell you a slab direct. But you'll probably hit resistance with the fabricator/installer, and void material warranty or guarantees, etc. Its good to have one group responsible for everything. I used a Ceasarstone brand material with an authorized dealer/fab/installer. I had confidence they knew how to fab/install to a high level of quality, at a reasonable /competitive rate.

You won't find anyone to work with you. I don't know any installers that will work with a slab they didn't buy. If something goes wrong, for example it cracks during fab, who's responsible?

We used EZ Floors at 2 different homes. Very pleased and the granite turned out wonderful. It is like $29 a sf. We went to the yard and picked out our slabs. They have lots of great options for backsplash. I believe EZ Floors has several houston area locations.

Not only that, those slabs are quite heavy and aren't easy to transport. But yes, there are some granite yards that do sell to the public. Check out local granite yards on eBay: granite countertop | eBay

Also, there are a few granite yards that has pre-fab granites: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from..._dmd=1&_ipg=50 Those are sold to the public; that is, if you have the right tools to cut down to size if needs to.

If you are looking to do bathroom or perhaps bar countertops, there is a place on Hempstead Hwy that sells only pre-cut/pre-finished pieces (don't think this would work for a kitchen). They come in different lengths. I did this for a secondary bathroom with double sinks and the piece cost only around $200. This is a great way for doing it on the cheap. I can't remember the name of the place....it's initials, like L&N or L&D or something like that, sorry, not helpful. The location is closer to FM 529 than 610.

Thanks, I'm having them come out tomorrow and measure the granite in my home. If I have more than 60 SF, I'm going to have to hold on re-doing my granite. Btw, they told me it usually takes 1-2 weeks to complete the job, is this normal?

I had EZ Floors do my kitchen a few months ago..great job by the way. It took about 5-7 days from picking out the slab to being installed. The granite install was first and then the back splash the next day.

Do they clean up pretty well? Any damage to your cabinets? Maybe I'm worrying too much...
