Well, you have to remember that in the city you usually get a mix of socio-economics. So drop out rates contribute to the HS ratings.

Usually in exurbs there isn't that mixture, so the drop out rates are lower.

The sooner they get rid of the TAKS as a system to rank schools the better.

I think this is right. I have a friend asking about moving into the city(not the suburbs), but only wanting 3 exemplary schools. Looks like 024 is as close as she can get.

Well, it's not like you have "settle" for anything living over there.

That's a fact! She's coming into a "little" inheritance.

Magnet is the best way to go.

(Sorry, I had to put something. I don't even live in Houston anymore. It just feels good to be part of a discussion about the greatest city in the greatest state).

I grew up in Klein ISD and went to all exemplary schools, but if you want city limits only . . . Magnet is the way to go.

Well, as I may have posted before, there are no guarantees with magnets. We applied to four and were accepted at none. We have friends in the same boat. Other people get in, no problem. That's the way the lottery works.

It should also be considered that these rankings are changed yearly. I school that is Exemplary one year may be Recognized the next, or vice versa.

I am completely new to this and trying to get some basic info..

Is the magnet admission totally based on lottery ?

Whats a Vanguard system ? Can someone apply for any Magnet/Vanguard if he lives in HISD ?

Actually, you CAN get into magnets. You just have to remove a few people . . .

Just kidding. (where are those smilie faces?)
