how do you find a rental house?
We are moving into temporary housing in Sugar Land until our out-of-state house sells. We would like a furnished apartment/townhouse/condo/house (house only if we don't have to do the yardwork since we won't have our lawn mower). The thing is we cannot sign a year lease because as soon as we sell our house that has been on the market for a year (!) we would like to buy. ANy suggestions? Is this something we would go to a realtor for or look in newspapers? Any web sites? I have not rented since college so I'm not sure how this works.

I would look into an extended stay hotel if you plan on being in it less than 3 months. I don't know any apartments/townhomes who will rent without AT LEAST a 3 month lease. You could definitely talk to a Realtor to find out about houses for rent... but my experience with rental houses is they usually want you to sign a lease for a year or two. When we moved down here, we rented an apartment for a year (2, 6-month leases) until we found our house. Our apartment manager even let us extend our lease for 1 month while we closed on the house.

how do you filter if they are furnished?
I was looking at Har.com. Is there a way to see if the houses are furnished? Or at least semi-furnished?
What kinds of questions should I ask about rental houses? (besides the obvious lease questions). Do renters generally have to mow/take care of pool, etc?

Another search term to try would be, "Corporate Housing" in Houston. These types of places are specifically designed with what you are looking for: furnished, utilities usually paid & short-term. The downside is that they are somewhat pricey -- but still less than an Extended Stay type hotel.

Thank you. Should we use a realtor to find corporate housing? Or do you just start calling places?
We have 3 kids and 2 dogs. I feel like this is mission impossible.

We used har.com to find our rental in The Woodlands however we did have to sign a 1 yr lease. We looked in TW as well as Sugar Land. Although we were not interested in furnished houses we did come across a few.
We are responsible for lawn maintenance (we hired gardeners who come in 2x/month - cost is minimal at $60/month) and I would suspect that if the house came with a pool, the tenant would be responsible for maintenance as well.
