Diversity of Houston Compared to Others
The challenge here is to provoke some deeper thought about diversity than the usual boxed and labelled generalizations. Usually people define diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, and sometimes by class and less about social or cultural diversity.
What other city can compare with Houston's liberal and conservative mix? Houston is one of the top country music markets as well as a top hip-hop music center. What other city can claim that in on breath ???? Too, latin, spanish or hispanic music are very popular and successful in Houston.
Some might say that Houston is a republican stronghold, yet a democrat unseated a nationally known and well connected republican congressman. Local congressional maps are dotted with republicans, democrats, liberatians, black, white, hispanics and asians in local and statewide offices. Also, the City Comptroller's sexual orientation is openly public.
Rice University is internationally known and is considered the "Harvard of the South". Texas Southern University is the second largest HBCU in the country. They are within 2 miles of each other, while University of Houston is right next door.
Houston has the third most impressive skyline, yet is home to one the largest bird migratory observation sites.
Houston is a major bible belt city, but has sizeable populations of Jewish, Muslim and Gay Communities.
The Texas Medical Center is one of the world largest medical complexes, but Houston is one the most underinsured city in the country
The Houston Ship Channel is the nation 2nd largest zoned port authority, but as a municipality Houston is ANTI-ZONE.
Some might view these diversities as negatives others may not. But diversity is more then the "black or white" or "inner city vs suburbs", etc...
