BFF getaway week in Galveston - ? about lodging
My best friend & I are just wanting to get away to the beach for a few days and have decided on Galveston because it's the closest drive from the DFW area. I know that it is still damaged from Ike, but all we care to do is hang out on the beach, talking and maybe doing some BBQ on our deck. We can only afford about $100 per night for lodging, but would like something fairly close to the beach (at least be able to see the ocean) w/ a balcony or deck, etc. for eating or grilling. Does anyone have any suggestions for us? Again, all we want is a fairly clean, quiet beach for some good talk and seashell gathering.
Thanks so much!!!
Angela

I believe the Holiday inn express is open and the conquestador is up again. those are the only ones I can think of for under a 100 per night. and on the Seawall.

Call before you haul. I think some things haven't reopened since the hurricane.

Gosh, I don't imagine there's going to be much in Galveston with a beach view for under $100.

Check out VRBO.com and ask around. Lots of landlords/owners looking to rent and make a deal.

It's an older hotel and it shows....but it's certainly clean and nice. The name of the hotel is the Commodor Hotel on the corner of 37th & Seawall. Best part of the beach for most is between 33rd St-53rd St so you would be in the area of beach that most people like to hang out at. You would be within easy walking distance of shops, bars, and dining. The crowd that stays at this hotel seems good too. I know because I used to live 3 houses away from this hotel and it always seems like it brought in a good crowd who wanted good prices and be in the most populated area of the beach.

If you are going weekdays rather than weekend, your rates will be lower. Galveston CVB - Lodging Info has links to most of the hotels. As mentioned above, the Commodore is very basic and older, but relatively decent and usually more economical that some others. Gaido's is very plain Jane as well, but usually okay. Casa del Mar may work, too - more condo (but very basic condo) than hotel w/small kitchenettes... Also check out the Vacation Rentals sections - you will usually find better deals on the rentals by individuals than by companies (2 diff. sections on the website); if you contact them directly, they may offer you better rates than they have listed on their sites/pages. Also, some Galveston hotels do participate w/Hotwire and Priceline, so you might get a cheaper rate that way (I think Hotwire separates the hotels into Seawall and non-Seawall locations but Priceline does not - has been a while since I checked)...
Not everything (restuarants, shops, etc.) on the island is open yet or back to what it was prior to Ike, but many places are.
Enjoy the trip.
